2026 NFL DRAFT

PROSPECT PROFILE

ย

KAYDEN McDONALD

DL, OHIO STATE 6-3, 325

ย

Strengths

  • Plays with excellent pad level and elite power which makes him a force at the POA
  • Lightning quick get off
  • Freak strength
  • Powerful leg drive and great footwork to continue to work through each rep instead of leaning on his opponents
  • Converts speed to power immediately off the snap
  • Does a good job of using his arms to keep his frame clean and shield off offensive linemen
  • Sneaky athleticism which shows in his stunts and slants
  • Fantastic motor. He rarely gives up on a rep until the whistle

Weaknesses

  • Has a tendency to try to get narrow by turning his shoulders between blockers losing his leverage
  • Does not have much of a pass rush repertoire at this point
  • Has a tendency to play off instinct and miss assignments. Saw a few reps where he is slanting or shooting a gap while others are not
  • Stamina is an issue with long drives or in 2 minute defense
  • Does not have the speed to play outside of a 0 or 1-tech alignment
  • Can get washed out by double team blocks

ย

Kayden McDonald is a throwback to old school, beefy, strong defensive tackles, but he has elite quickness and strength which makes him a problem for modern day offensive lines. He offers good lateral quickness, and pad level to go along with his elite ability to hold the POA and stuff the run. What he lacks in pass rush moves, he makes up for with his elite first step quickness and a decent bag of rips and swims that overwhelm his opponent off the snap. While he doesnโ€™t get home for many sacks, he disrupts the pocket which causes clean up sacks and broken plays. His power and strength are NFL ready which is on display in his ability to rag doll opponents and become immovable at the POA. While he has played reps from many spots on the DL, I would consider him at his best in a 0-1 tech alignment, where his power and quickness can be a problem for any IOL and his ability to 2 gap can free up other teammates for 1v1 matchups.

IMO, McDonald is a cut below Peter Woods as a prospect, but his combination of technique, burst and power are elite from a DL perspective and clearly separate him from Lee Hunter to securely be DT2 in this class. If the Chargers were to miss out on Woods, they would not miss much selecting McDonald at 1.22, as they have not had a DT with this much talent in a while.
