Ryan’s Notes
Positives
- Nice mirror skills to sink his hips and stay with MHJ’s immaculate breakdown.
- Light on his toes down in press with a smooth hip action that is tied to his footwork, he closed the space well to roll in tight to MHJ’s vertical route and didn’t allow the big man to get his arm up and over to swim himself open; that was a high level man coverage rep.
- Again another fearless rep vs MHJ down the sideline, this time he draws the rare OPI on a push off but the way he extended back into the catch after getting his head around is nice detailed stuff.
- He had an absolutely elite rep against Ohio State where he is out leveraged by the best WR in the game but stays within a half yard before extending up and fighting through the catch point and the next play was even better!
- His junior year tape showed a more muscular build and it showed as he stopped the RB in solo goalline tackle which alleviates the strength concerns of his junior tape. Against Stanford he blew through a screen to make a smart stop in the backfield holding both players in his grip.
- His coverage skills are just fantastic with quick tidy footwork, a controlled balance and a natural stickiness which can’t be taught.
- He sees his targets’ movements at speeds I can’t even comprehend and he is able to mirror them from within a yard, that kind of talent should not be overlooked just because he is an inch and 5 lbs undersized.
Negatives
- Slight worry about his physicality as he was getting thrown around by Ebuka and Fleming who match NFL level of blocking prowess.
- He completely whiffed on the tackle attempt to the backfield flare route, he just dived in with no real form after accelerating into it.
- MHJ pushed him back into his hips by delaying his break with great timing, he had safety help so I think he should have pushed into his outside shoulder but it’s hard to know what he was reading.
- That said, I have some concerns about his small arms as when they combine with his lower height I’m not sure he can survive in true man on the outside on 3rd down but the amount of big body receivers is shrinking and the league is rarely in press man on 3rd down anyway.
- He has shown he can play through contact too which alleviates some of that concern..
Ryan’s Summary
People gave Cam Hart the credit for shutting MHJ down in the big game in 2023 but it was all Benjamin Morrison, his man coverage skills are very very good. I had concerns around his functional strength as a sophomore but he put in the work and alleviated worries with physical play despite his leaner frame. His hip injury is the big red flag but his tape (the only thing I can truly review) is elite and he should be a first round pick in my opinion.
