Win and advance. Lose and the season ends in the cold.

The Los Angeles Chargers head to Foxborough tonight to take on the New England Patriots in a Wild Card matchup that brings together a lot of familiar Chargers themes: playoff pressure, hostile environment, and a Patriots organization that never seems to fully go away.

Herbert, the Stakes, and the Window

This game will inevitably be framed around Justin Herbert and postseason results. Fair or not, thatโ€™s where things are at. The Chargers have a roster thatโ€™s built to win now, and games like this are where narratives change – or harden.

New Englandโ€™s defense is disciplined and physical, and theyโ€™ll try to make Herbert live underneath and earn everything. How the Chargers handle early pressure – both literal and situational – will matter a lot.

Patriots Momentum vs Chargers Variance

The Patriots come in as the steadier team: strong finish, home field, and a rookie quarterback playing with confidence. They donโ€™t beat themselves, and theyโ€™re comfortable playing ugly if the game goes that way.

The Chargers, on the other hand, have the higher ceiling – but also the wider range of outcomes. If they protect the football and stay ahead of the chains, this is a very winnable game. If they let New England control tempo, it can get tight quickly.

A Familiar Face, Old Memory

One storyline that wonโ€™t be mentioned much on the broadcast but still resonates with Chargers fans: Mike Vrabel.

Back in the 2006 playoffs, Vrabel – then a Patriots linebacker – was part of the group that knocked the Chargers out in San Diego. After the game, he was caught dancing on the Chargers logo at midfield. It became one of those moments that stuck, especially considering how loaded that Chargers team was.

Now Vrabel is on the other sideline as head coach, again facing the Chargers in a playoff game. It doesnโ€™t change what happens between the lines tonight – but itโ€™s part of the shared history between these franchises.

What to Watch Tonight

  • Early-down offense for the Chargers
  • Red zone efficiency (points matter in this environment)
  • Pass protection vs New Englandโ€™s pressure looks
  • Whether the Chargers can dictate pace instead of reacting

This doesnโ€™t need to be perfect football. It needs to be composed, physical, and opportunistic.

Kickoff is coming.

Buffalo just fired McDermott after 9 seasons of limited postseason success. Just getting there onviously isn’t enough.

Agreed. That is essentially why Baltimore fired John Harbaugh and why Tomlin stepped down ahead of potentially being fired.

Will be interesting to see where the coaching search goes. A few thoughts:

  • The fact that Roman and Devlin were fired so quickly indicates that this decision was made long before the playoff game. At minimum, it was being considered. It’s likely Jim & Joe have an idea of the direction they would like to go
  • While running the ball and being physical will always be important, I think they’ve been there and tried that. With a QB Herbert’s caliber, they need to find a coach with a vision to un-lock that potential
  • Lots of negative McDaniel comments below. I agree with them and don’t see Jim’s emotional macho-man persona as a fit with Mike. That said, Jim seems like a smart guy willing to learn from what was clearly a mistake. Fun fact, McDaniel has a grand total of 1 year experience as an OC (under Shanahan in SF). I think Mike could unlock Justin
  • Of the former HCs, Dabol is likely the best choice. I liked him for HC when the team hired Staley
  • Everyone is trying to catch lightning in a bottle with the next Ben Johnson. I would rather have the team stay a bit more grounded instead of taking a chance on an inexperienced dude. There needs to be a mix of ability, experience and personality.
  • I wonder if they’re going to consider internal candidates (Lal, Day). I think both have made impressions on Harbaugh. Will be interesting to see what interest they attract.

Some interesting names here that aren’t as high profile as perhaps McDaniels and Dabol, neither of whom I’m overly excited about. I really don’t see McDaniels as a fit for Harbaugh’s stated team identity.

Greg Roman firing opens up an intriguing Los Angeles Chargers coaching search filled with plenty of high profile names – A to Z Sports https://share.google/cke0o2bV3fkRODG6Q

Definitely a positive development and getting rid of Devlin was also important. I hope they don’t rush it. The chance to be Chargers OC is a plum and we can attract great candidates.

Just came here to say this. Good start.

We are going to see a total rebuild of the offensive line – players, concepts, coaching, etc.

Holy hell,

NEVER thought Jimbo would pull the trigger. Good to see he actually values results versus buddies. Must have been difficult, but better late than never.

Gotta say I am stunned that Harbaugh pulled the trigger, but the new hire will be just as, if not more, important than firing Roman. This has to be a home run hire. Mcdaniel would be great because he has a Shanahan rushing offense background, but he does have some explosive and creative pass concepts, that he couldn’t fully execute with Tua at QB.

I can’t imagine them hiring a guy like McDaniel. I could see Monken if its a “bigger” name.

If they go younger, then there is again the Ravens ties to Travis Switzer, or maybe they look across town to Sheelhouse from the Rams. Someone like that sounds much more likely to me than the Daboll or McDaniels’ of the world.

I agree I don’t see McDaniels as a fit with Harbaugh. I could maybe see Daboll or Monken. I’m just hoping for a modern day offense. Hopefully that isn’t too much to ask.

The two worst coaches on the staff gone. Thank god.

Glad they’re gone, but holy fuck, what a waste of 2 years. There was a collective groan when Jim hired Roman. What would this team have done with a decent OC? I think they make it much further than first round playoff exit. You could also argue that they would have buried the Texans last year and had a shot at a championship both years. That one hire completely fucked their seasons.

My time machine is broken, so can’t change the past. Just frustrating that a clearly bad decision for a critical position on a team that made so many good decision changed their trajectory. Frustrating.

They need to get the staff sorted, starting with an OC that understands the modern NFL and can adapt to what defenses are doing (basically the polar opposite of Roman). I doubt this will happen, but watching Phil at the LOS calling out protections and basically dissecting the defense struck me as what’s missing with this Chargers offense. There was a quote attributed to a Charger WR where he told a Pats defender that “they had no clue what the Pats defense was doing.” That’s terrible. Wouldn’t happen on Phil’s watch.

Unless there are some big staff changes, welcome to the Harbaugh ceiling. 10-11 wins in the regular season and WC blowouts. Remember when the focus of the offseason was to add more “weapons” for Herbert. All those weapons added up to 3 points with two weeks to prepare. If anyone that watched this offense every week thinks it doesn’t look disjointed and boring, I don’t know what to tell you.

The OL wasn’t a real issue until mid 2nd half when the Pats realized they just need to run basic stunts from day 1 training camp install to get pressure every play. Good thing we ignored the OL in the draft in order to draft a RD1 RB who got 545 yards and a WR in Rd2 who got us 30 catches for 324 yards. Where would we be without that? We probably get shut out in NE.

Say what you want about the Staley, Lynn and Norv losses, but at least they weren’t boring blowouts which is what this team gives you. 6 points in Jax, 3 points in NE, 10 points vs Wash, 16 points vs Hou.

We are now the west coast Steelers. Winning seasons and WC exits. Welcome to the Harbaugh golden era.

Fun fact: Norv is tied with Coryell and Bobby Ross for most playoff wins as the Chargers HC (3). Both Ross & Turner were 3-3 in the playoffs. Coryell was 3-4.

Harbaugh is now 5-5 in the playoffs (0-2 with the Chargers, 5-3 with the 49ers). 2026 is an important season for him. Jim needs to demonstrate that he can organize a championship team. It’s pretty clear that Roman is holding this team back.

I know there’s a lot of buzz for McDonald and Daboll. Both would clearly be upgrades. However, I think I would have a long conversation with Frank Smith. He’s young-ish (44), spent time with the Chargers and is aligned with Harbaugh’s OL-led philosophy.

At minimum, Roman and Devlin need to go.

I wasn’t going to comment on this at first, but with Tomlin stepping down I think its an interesting conversation for context. Tomlin, who is a surefire Hall of Fame coach, had a playoff record of 8 – 12. Guys like Pete Carroll, Sean Payton, Tony Dungy had .500 playoff records. John Harbaugh and Mike Holmgren who were always in the playoffs have records of 13 – 11.

The point is that the important thing is getting to the playoffs first and then hopefully you can make something happen from there. Obviously the Chargers loss was pathetic, but there are only really a handful of coaches that have great playoff records and most of those guys (like Reid and Belichick and Walsh) also had a perennial MVP at QB during their reign.

The vast majority of coaches are not going to do any better than Harbaugh and most of them would be worse. We just have to hope they make the right coordinator hires and are able to elevate Herbert’s playoff game because I don’t think he’s going anywhere.

I’m not advocating to cut bait on Harbaugh. My support would be taking a big hit if he hadn’t made the decision to can Roman (and Devlin, IMO, was a necessary sweetener).

Losing playoff games sucks but you’re right that playoff success can be elusive. Scoring 3 points with Justin Herbert as your QB is atrocious. Continuing to allow your self-professed beloved QB to get hammered because your OC is an incompetent dinosaur unable to adjust borders on malfeasance.

Harbaugh correctly made what must have been a difficult decision if you look at his staunch loyalty. Good for him. The resulting new hires, the path forward to replace weak links, the continued roster building are aspects I’ll be very interested to watch.

So no….I’ve pulled no support. It’s wavered as I watched Roman retain play calling duties. He’s gone. Good decision and one that gives me hope and bolsters that wavering support. I viewed 2026 as the year that this team should be able to make a serious push given the state it was left in by Telesco and others. That’s still my expectation.

Breaking news – Chargers shit the bed in the playoffs for the third year in a row.

You have to wonder how many guys the Patriots have on the field. They completely overwhelm the line and pressure Herbert on every play, yet they still have enough guys to cover so that not a single Chargers receiver is ever open.

Harbaugh will use losing Minter as an excuse to keep Roman because he wouldn’t want to change both in the same offseason.

I have to say that I was pondering my life choices when I was sitting there watching Herbert get smashed by Williams around 4.30 am. I wouldn’t have done everything differently though. Eventually the Chargers will actually win in the playoffs and it will all have been worth it. Right? ๐Ÿ™‚

What I do know is that with Roman at the controls we won’t be winning a Super Bowl anytime soon. I would love to see what a modern OC could do with this offense and Herbert. Not holding my breath for that to happen tough.

Last month I re read The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald for the fourth time, but for the first time in about 16 years. The final line really hit home what it is like to be a fan of this team.

“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past”

Who knows if we will ever get there, but if we do, all the more sweeter the struggle would have made it.
