I just read that. Great news. One year means that 1.) we may get to do this again in twelve months, and 2.) the team needs to get his eventual replacement into the building right away.

@smith I dont think it’s a sign of discontent or lack of commitment to the Chargers, I just don’t think Khalil sees the benefit of doing anything more than one year at a time right now. His cash earnings were probably going to be 18-22M this year anyway even if he got more years and a high APY, but with him contemplated retirement at the end of the last two seasons, he probably just wants to prioritize flexibility and options in 2026.

But if he does play and has a similar year in 2025, I bet he stays in LA.

But yeah, we do still need to look for another piece. Dupree is no spring chicken either

@kylededi Absolutely. I think a one year deal is beneficial for both sides. If Mack wants to retire after the season, then he puts that $18 in his pocket and goes to play pickleball with the rest of the retirees. If he has another monster year he can come back on an even richer one year deal if he chooses to.

The team should still bring in one or two young guys this year then at least one more in next year to overhaul the position. 2026 will be Tuli and three guys who aren’t currently on the roster. In Hortiz we trust.

@smith I’m still glad he’s back. It’s what I expected.

A multi-year deal would have been better for the Chargers. He is going to count ~$27M against the cap this season because of the lingering void year money… unless they again incorporate void year(s). Had he signed a 2 year contract, they could have lowered that 2025 cap hit.

In distantly related news, JK Scott is back at 2/$6. I’m not racing out to grab a #16 jersey, but it’s nice to have another reliable player back in the fold.

So far, everything I know of has been expected: cut Bosa, cut Gus, re-sign Mack, re-sign Molden, re-sign Scott, re-sign Fisk.

Still a long way to go. Unfortunately, we won’t get WR Higgins, WR Adams, or G Smith. I would love Hortiz to surprise us with a big impact signing.

GMs shopping at Tiffany’s while Hortiz sniffing around clearance rack at TJ Maxx with second highest cap space available.

Yes, I’m getting impatient. 😂

@unclejammsarmy That absolutely sucks. This was always the danger with the one year prove-it contracts when the player proved it. Good luck to Poona, and good luck to the remainders of the Chargers’ d-line.

@smith that deal lands pretty much where everyone thought. Just sucks man. I guess it’s DT in the draft for sure now.

@66_jimbo Wow. If that was his market, so glad the Chargers didn’t re-sign him. He’s not even close to worth that kind of contract.
