Enjoyed the podcast as always. Good show guys. A few thoughts:
I totally agree the interior pass rush is lacking and I am not hopeful it is going to get much better with the players the Chargers have this year. Part of the rebuild for sure.
In general, on both sides of the ball the interior O and D lines need serious upgrades. Most of Herbert’s injuries have come from interior pass pressure. The good teams have figured out that interior pass rush is at least as important and maybe more important than the outside guys. The Chiefs have great interior D pass rush but are very mediocre on the outside. Similarly their three interior O lineman are very good and their tackles are so so and yet they win. Part of that is Mahomes agility but that only makes it more important for a guy like Herbert. Bozeman is a disaster so far and Pipkins may get better but today is below average at best.
To Jack’s point about the RBs being used in pass pro, I think this is largely to shore up bad interior O line play. They are making blocks over and over again to save Herbert. If they were going on routes, even safety valve routes. Herbert would be even more banged up.
@gbgh Yes, I think we shouldn’t be surprised when players at position groups most of us thought looked thin heading into the season (DT, for example) don’t quite deliver the goods. The coaching staff are not miracle workers and this was probably always going to be a year of transition from a roster perspective. It doesn’t mean the team can’t come close to double-digit wins. But it’s almost impossible to create a strong roster at every position in the NFL, especially after inheriting the cap problem that Hortiz did. Really, what they’ve achieved in one off-season is pretty impressive!
Totally agree on how the RBs are being used, although query whether they couldn’t look to involve them in some other ways whilst not risking Herbert’s health (eg, screen and swing passes; TEs brought in to pass protect instead, etc). It seems like by not involving the RBs through the air, they’re robbing Peter to pay Paul right now and it’s affecting the passing game. Maybe they’re happy to live with it though if the Defense and Special Teams can play at a high-level.
