@buck-melanoma good to hear that Herbert has been slinging it since being back.  These next 2 weeks’ reps will prove so incredibly crucial as we approach week 1.

It also looks like Johnston has been showing signs of improvement.  I’ll believe it when I see it in a regular season game against starters, but I guess its better than hearing discouraging news.

Good film breakdown of some of Joe Alt’s preseason game tape.

The flexibility and pad level he has for a man of his height and stature is truly unbelievable.

@alisterlloyd some at BFTB are calling him a bust. lmao

I think he’ll do just fine making the switch to RT. No rookie goes without a few bumps in the road but I see Alt on a similar trajectory as Slater.

@buck-melanoma I haven’t seen that on BFTB. Do you have a link?

@bolt_dk not readily available, no. I only lurk there occasionally. I know it was said by user Bombillo after either the 1st or 2nd preseason game so probably in one of those threads.

@bolt_dk found it. Scroll through the thread, you’ll see it.

@buck-melanoma Nabers will probably be a stud so, for some, they’ll never be able to get past not taking the elite playmaker.

But I’m not sure how you could watch Alt’s Notre Dame tape, his preseason snaps, all the reports from camp, and listen to his press conferences and not come away excited about what he might become for the Chargers.

Rookie lumps and all that aside (as you say, which are probably inevitable), he looks a really talented player with leadership qualities too.

When was the last time a T, G or C more sexier than a WR or QB draft pick? Alt is killing it, better and better in every game, a huge upgrade at the OL. For someone who never played at RT is so impressive for where he’s at now. If Alt has a rookie year close to Slater’s was, this OL will be top 10. Alt has shown how much he can mask flaws at RG whether it is Pipkins or someone else at that spot this season.

You are right. A solid line will go a long way towards winning games. Look at KC last year how many superstar WR did they have? Yeah, TC Kelce was a stud but if the QB is on his back no way he gets the ball. Pipkins was a project that never really was great at OT and got nicked up. I expect Alt to anchor the OL for many, many years. There will always be WR to draft (look at a few studs last year, Downs, Reed, Dell, none in the first round and Puka was found in the 5th) So, what made these WR rookies last year so good was QB who wasn’t flat on his back.

@tui1hit Now, hopefully Bozeman can just stay healthy and be average-to-above average.

It’d be such a shame if we have elite bookends and a sieve in the middle of our line. If Boze doesn’t excel, I hope they add what I’d see as the final core piece to the line next offseason.

@kylededi I hope they do that regardless of Bozeman’s play. We need a young, long term answer at center.

An above average from Bozeman could make this OL a formidable line. I worry that with Bozeman, he can’t compensate for guards errors of which Linsley was so capable of. Zion hasn’t yet lived up to his worth as a former 1st rd pick and Pipkins who never had any playing experience at guard. They will be seriously tested against the Raiders, Chiefs, Browns, Ravens, etc. which have dominating IDL.
