Sorry if this question has gone out and been answered before. Will this be open thread friendly and is there a function akin to the “Z” key to toggle through comments?

Same question here. I would really appreciate that feature if it exists. Because of how this forum nests replies, it is necessary to go through the entire thread to look for new replies, unless I’m not aware of a way to jump to new posts.

@tau837 @mongotesla I’ll look into this. It looks like I can reformat the forum so the new comments display first, basically in reverse order Tham what it is now. Only concern is it involves manually playing with the code.

I’ll also check for highlighting new posts if possible. Thay said, I doubt there is a way to cycle through new posts, but I’ll check.

Welcome, @mongotesla !!

@kylededi Not sure if it is possible to stop replies from nesting (indenting right under the post to which one is replying). In another forum I visit daily, there is no nesting. Replies just go to the bottom of the list, becoming the new last post in the thread. One can see replies because they are quoted in the reply post when one hits reply… whereas here, I have to highlight text in a post and click ” to quote it.

Just mentioning this in case there is an easy option to turn it on.

I switched this forum over to the non-nested template to see how this looks.

I’m not sure if I like this system for quoting each other, because it defaults to the entire quote, which if replying to a long post can get cumbersome. Overall, it feels a little clunkier IMO. I’ll ask them if there is a way to create a plug-in that let’s you cycle through “new posts/comments.”

In the meantime, there is a recent posts page on the header menu that shows the most recent posts in all forums. It’s a bit of a manual workaround, but it’s something that other forum mod’s have reported their members use as their homepage.

I’ll keep tinkering. If I have to, exploring a separate option for Game Threads might be the solution.

@kylededi Thanks, Kyle!! You’ve set a great joint up!

We have to learn and navigate the platform. I’m notoriously lazy, so I’m always looking for shortcuts! To reverse order of the comments and highlighting new ones would be an option for open threads. We do participate in those, as you know. Everyone except for Buck! Just messin’ with my brother Buck!! We’ll work it out. You are doing a spectacular thing!!!

@mongotesla 🤣 Thanks Mongo!

I’m trying to figure this out, and asked the developers if I could hire them to make a plugin that could address this. A workaround for the time being could be that I make a super minimal Open Thread article, and we chat/comment from the Article page, not the Forum page. I THINK those operate more like a traditional open thread… but they don’t reverse the order.

So far, I’ve researched that I can manually enter code that will reverse the order, but it will mess up some other functions by doing so, making me hesitant to launch it. BUT, the Arictles are supposed to highlight “new” comments, but there isn’t a button that cycles through them yet.

I’ll let you know how my talk with the devs goes!

PS – Stoked to see you here :). Where the heck is Tui?! We need to reach out to that dude and have him join us!

@kylededi if only there was a PM feature at BFTB. I realize this may sound shitty but there are folks from there I want here but also folks I don’t.

@buck-melanoma I’m looking into if there’s a “mute” button or plans to create one. The devs talked about it being on their list of priorities years ago, but apparently it’s a very complicated process.

One thing to consider though, you can at least rest assured that you have active moderators that will delete troll posts and block troll accounts. There will still be opinions/bloggers that may rub people the wrong way, but that’s always a sign that the site is growing.

One thing I’ve definitely been thinking about is how we can best nurture the community we’ve all built together over the years, while also seeing this site grow into something that achieves personal and professional goals for myself and the other content creators on the site. Any growth is good growth (as long as it’s not troll accounts), but the more members we have, the more it may feel diluted for the old guard in comparison to what we had previously (although, we navigated tons of trolls as it was).

One thing I can do @buck-melanoma , should we want to find a middle ground between the two, is I can create a separate “Private” forum that would be invisible to anyone without the password to activate it. It’s something that’s mainly used for “paid/premium” subscriptions and content, but something I also might create if different groups start coming over and joining, like members of the Die Hard Bolt Club, and something I’ve thought of creating for our base.

Just one way to help the forum grow into a “commercial success,” while still giving our community it’s own sandbox to play it.

@kylededi I don’t want to see the site inundated with trolls but I also don’t want to stifle discussion. I’m not interested in controlling ideas at all, just hopefully keeping conversation civil, entertaining, & informative. Please know I appreciate all that you’re doing, Kyle. Don’t spend time worrying over any restrictions. We’re all adults here.

Well, kinda. lol

@buck-melanoma Don’t worry Buck, I know you do just by you being here and posting man, I can’t tell you what it means to me that everyone’s come on board and has joined us on this venture! And I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want a feature like a mute button… I know I hit that thing a few times.

We’ll have a tight lid on trolls. There’s built in restrictions (can’t create topics, can’t post links, attachments, etc) until you reach 5 posts, and even then I still get notifications to check certain things. That, and you always have the “flag” option, which sends it right to me. As we grow, I’ll be able to designate additional mods to help me. We’ll keep this tight!!!

But, I’m also very serious about the private sandbox. That was something I thought of from the get-go… if you ever get to the point where you think that’s something we should incorporate, it’d be very easy to do!

@kylededi I was part of a forum a few years back where we had a private area for more…..sensitive? discussions. That may or may not be something to consider. Another way that might be used, in lieu of private messaging, is to exchange info like personal contact information.

Just spitballing here….

@kylededi I don’t know how to reach out to Tui. Maybe we can catch him on BFTB, but I haven’t been over there in a while.

Not built-in, but I presence of the source-code button let’s you do whatever you want me to you get crafty. But if we want an official button, I’m sure it’s something I can roll into one of the dev upgrades Smile

This offseason really made me miss Tom Telesco.

Done by typing <p style=font-family:’Courier New”’>This offseason really made me miss Tom Telesco.</p>

Definitely don’t expect people to do this as a long-term solution… it just suggests it should be easy to add

I like the netted commentating system better. It would be great if new/unread comments could be highlighted or we could have the ability to sort it to your own liking. I find it hard to sort through comments I have read and new ones I haven’t read. I liked the older version of BFTB, where new comments were yellow and went white if you ever scrolled through them (now you have to click on every single comment to make them go white) + replies were always under the original comment.
I disagree with Tau and the ‘quote system’. I have always felt it got bad quickly with many comments and replies.

I also liked the old font better. I find this one harder to read because it’s bolder and feels more clumped.

Also, I’m just spitballing. I have no idea how difficult any of the suggestions are to implement.

@bolt_dk I’ve been going back and forth on the font… I’ll see if I can check t to something more neutral.@bolt_dk The “Article” commenting system actually has the highlighted new comments feature you mentioned, and it’s on my list of things to have added to the “Forum” side. I also prefer the nesting personally, mostly since I can’t customize the format of how it displays on the forum’s home, and the unnested version doesn’t provided helpful info like who posted last and suchThe “Latest Posts” and “Unread Posts” on the sidebar have really helped me keep track of activity as well, I think a part of this is just learning how to navigate something new :)Another thing I may ask them to do while activating the “highlighted new posts” feature is also highlight the posts on the dropdown at the header of topics. That might help quickly navigate as well.

The articles have a “self sort” feature, but the forum doesn’t. I also plan on asking if the Forum can just copy the Article Formatting and bring it over here.

I would definitely recommend the Article-side commenting systems when we have Open Forums. It auto-updates, and has a little chat box that will actually display incoming messages as they are received… it almost feels like a chat room

@tau837 – how has navigating been as of late for you?

@kylededi Thanks for the respons.

As a sidenote. There are some comments about this site as MP is asking what has happened. I’ve made one too to clear some things up. You might want to take a look as to prevent misinformation and potential animosity between the sites. @bolt_dk I actually saw this, and I really appreciate your response. I don’t think there’s anything left for me to add, I think you summed it up perfectly. I’m going to roll over whether or not there’s anything I should add today, but I think you nailed it.

@bolt_dk @tau837 @mongotesla @buck-melanoma

Here is an email of the requested dev work. Let me know if there’s anything else you want to see.

I really appreciate your response! I apologize for my delay, and totally understand that the work I’m asking for will be a paid, custom deal, but I’m happy to do so! I’ve just been trying to make sure I knew exactly what we’d be asking for before going further.

1) Cross-Posting Capability would still be great – OR – it could simply be a Widget/Module that could appear on the Homepage that linked back to the forum. The need for it to format as a Blog Post isn’t the priority, but having the ability for it to be featured on a HomePage Tile would be ideal!

2) Expanding on requests 2 and 3, I actually think everything on our “checklist” would be complete if we were able to format the forum topics with the features of WPDiscuz. WPDiscuz has many of the features we are looking for: Even if we aren’t able to carry it over “exactly,” the features at Discuz are exactly what we are looking for
  • Highlighting “new” posts.
  • Making the comments sortable, so members can choose to see more recent comments first
  • The auto-refresh and “chat bubble” is excellent
  • Ability to turn off “downvotes” so we only have “upvotes”
Stuff that we would like to add, even if we’re recreating the functionality WPDiscuz has at the Forum:
  • Perhaps highlighting new comments in the “nesting summary” at the header to quickly find new topics as well. However, these should only “un-highlight” when you see the comment in its native location, or “click” on it. As of now, when you click on it, you can only see the comment… but if you could also “reply” directly to that comment from the pop-out, that would be  ideal!
    • Screenshot for reference
    • image.png
  • Having a “sarcasm font.” This would act/be coded similar to the “spoiler” button, but instead of blocking out the text unless it’s clicked, it just lets users change the font of their desired text to “courier new.”
  • A “mute” button would be amazing. It wouldn’t have to outright block users, but if it could “redact” or “hide” their posts, the functionality would be served.

I’m sorry for all the brainstorming, “is this possible” type questioning. I’m happy to get started and make a payment on this work if we’re good to go, even if there is stuff we still need to toggle with and adjust to make this feasible!

@kylededi thanks man! I’m sure there’s functionality here that I still haven’t learned. Appreciate you pursuing all of this. 👍

My comment about preferring new responses go to the end rather than nesting is negated if new comments can be highlighted and especially if there could be a mechanism to jump to new comments.

I’m okay with the nesting, I just have to periodically scroll through all comments to make sure I haven’t missed anything, which isn’t the greatest but also not a dealbreaker.

Have you used the “Unread Posts” sidebar? I actually find that helps me navigate  a ton, it directs you right to a post that was made.

But I’m still waiting for a response from the devs on their quote to do the work previously mentioned!
