The Chargers are back in prime time as they get ready to face off against the Arizona Cardinals.

Going into the game, both team have healthy-sized injury reports. The only player on the Chargers report listed as OUT for the game is Deane Leonard, while Joey Bosa, Hayden Hurst, and Quentin Johnston are DOUBTFUL, and DJ Chark Jr, Derius Davis, Dimi Fehoko, Kristian Fulton, Ladd McConkey, and Ja'Sir Taylor are QUESTIONABLE.

The Cardinals have Own Pappoe and Darius Robinson listed as OUT and a handful of QUESTIONABLE players. The biggest update though is that Marvin Harrison Jr. has no designation, as he's expected to be full-go.

Leonard Placed on Injured Reserve, replacements signed to Active Roster

With Deane Leonard has not only been ruled out for the game, but he's also been placed on the Injured Reserve, meaning it will be at least four games before we'll see him again. In a corresponding move, CB's Dicaprio Bootle and Shaun Wade have been signed to the active roster to full in for this banged up secondary room.

Will Chargers pass rush capitalize on a banged-up Cardinals offensive line?

The Cardinals have lost two starting offensive lineman to the injured reserve, a pretty dismal situation when facing a team with as strong of a pass rush ass Los Angeles. Will Hernandez was graded out as PFF's 15th best guard at the time of his injury, and Jonah Williams was a big-money free agent acquisition this offseason for Arizona. Kyler Murray will have his work cut out for him extending plays and avoiding the pass rush.

PFF Betting Odds

Currently, the Chargers are only 1-point favorites in this game, with an over/under set at 44-points. For a Charger team that has suppressed opponents to less than 19 points per game, but has had scoring woes of it's own, that seems like a high number.

Keep the conversation going below!

As always, get some chatter going in the comment section below everyone! Here's to Jim Harbaugh's Chargers pushing forward to another victory!

While there has been considerable reason for optimism so far this season, the Chargers' offense remains somewhat of a question mark. They enter their sixth game of the season ranked 26th in offensive points per game, a humbling statistic for a fanbase that prides itself on having what they believe is a top-5 QB in the league.

The 18.2 points per game they've managed to score have been a product of injuries to key players, a renewed focus on running the football and game management, and young offensive weapons (linemen included) still trying to find a rhythm with their new quarterback.

This team has been anchored by Jesse Minter's furious defense, which has applied a ruthless pass rush to opposing offenses week in and week out. The Chargers lead the league in Opponents' Points Per Game, allowing a low 13.2 points—more than a point lower than the next-best team, the Steelers. Their stout run defense, anchored by cast-off free agent acquisitions on prove-it deals and the return of an old friend in Denzel Perryman, along with incredibly impressive safety play in the defensive backfield, has created a unit that doesn't offer many exploitable holes for opposing offenses.

However, this week may test that belief. The cornerback room has been decimated by injuries, with Asante Samuel landing on IR after a bye-week practice injury, and Kristian Fulton held out of practice with a bad hamstring. Depth pieces Deane Leonard and Ja'Sir Taylor have also been on the injury report all week, suggesting that once again this unit will be anchored by two rookie 5th-round picks. Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still performed exceptionally well last week against a Broncos offense that has yet to find its passing rhythm with rookie Bo Nix at the helm, but can they hold off a generational talent at wide receiver with a dynamic, play-making QB who will try to stave off the Chargers' pass rush long enough to reach the deep corners of the field?

This test for these young cornerbacks comes at a crucial time, as the offenses low-scoring totals means that a few explosive passing plays to Marvin Harrison Jr could open this game up for the Cardinals at any time. The Chargers - and their secondary - must play four quarters of disciplined football to keep MHJ from ripping this game open.

Ironically, rookie Cam Hart has already been tested in a similar matchup. Hart’s Fighting Irish played against Marvin Harrison Jr.’s Buckeyes just last year. Those who were advocating for Cam Hart during draft season often pointed to how impressive his reps were in this matchup. It's not often you hear of a Day 3 rookie shadowing an offense's top threat, but that may be the recipe for success for the Chargers come Monday night.

If you’re wondering whether the moment might feel a little too big for Cam Hart, watch this interview about his thought process while preparing to face MHJ. Marvin Harrison Jr. was held to a paltry 3-catch, 32-yard performance against Notre Dame. Hart clearly has the confidence to take on this matchup again, and his experience against MHJ could be a difference-maker against a team that is relying on Harrison to move the football this year.

The other matchup to follow will be whether the Chargers' pass rush can improve their containment issues from last week. The rushers were winning time and time again, but they struggled to bring down a slippery Nix and too often lost containment, letting him run free. Murray ranks last in the league in throws across the middle, only targeting that area 25% of the time on intermediate passes. He’s an elusive athlete who loves to scramble and keeps his eyes far downfield when he’s on the run. If the pass rush can keep Murray contained within the pocket and limit his time to throw, the Chargers' defense should be able to feast.

Site Update

We’re going to mix things up a bit from a formatting perspective and update what you can expect (at a minimum) for content moving forward throughout the season.

First, I owe you an apology for being absent for a bit. There’s no real excuse for going MIA—other than just feeling stretched thin with my work/life balance. I’m currently juggling three transactions that are closing concurrently next week, and I'm still working full-time while caring for my daughter.

I hear your comments and totally empathize. This level of content isn’t what you came here for, and I’m committed to doing better.

To help, I’m reformatting things a bit. On the Home Page, the left box will host our Matchup-Specific Thread, which will include:

Open Thread for the Week

Lessons from the Previous Week

Key Offensive Matchup

Key Defensive Matchup

Game Day Open Thread

The right box on the homepage will continue to host our Podcasts and any non-matchup-specific articles.

In the Forum, you’ll notice a few changes as well. We’re going to feature the Weekly Matchup articles at the top, to encourage more organization and excitement around the current week’s game.

Over time, I hope structuring things this way will help me maintain a clear path for content production, while guiding conversations to generate more awesome discussions.

And of course, if there’s anything you’d like to add or suggest as part of a weekly content calendar, I’m all ears!

Week 7: LAC @ ARZ

This week is bound to be an exciting matchup! The Chargers' defense put on a dominant display against the Denver Broncos last Sunday. The pass rush did a phenomenal job of pressuring Bo Nix, but to his credit, the rookie managed to use his legs to extend plays and evade the rush.

While the pass rush struggled to bring the quarterback down, the disruption was clear. It served as a perfect tune-up game as the Bolts head to Arizona to face an even greater challenge in Kyler Murray, who has the skills to evade pressure and the arm to make the Chargers pay if they aren’t disciplined.

We’ll have more updates on this game throughout the week, but feel free to start the conversation below as we prepare to take on a dynamic quarterback like Murray. We’re also anxiously awaiting news on whether Marvin Harrison Jr. will be available for the matchup. Missing the chance to see a generational talent like Harrison test our defense—which has been lights-out so far—would be a shame.

What do you think of this week’s matchup against the Cardinals, StormCloud?
