Our Chargers are in Cleveland preparing to take on Jameis Winston and the Browns.

Cleveland has been struggling this season, trudging through the first handful of games without the heart of their offense, Nick Chubb. DeShaun Watson continued his passing struggles from last year before tearing his Achilles, and Jameis Winston has appeared to provide a spark the team desperately needed in his place. Third-round pick Cedric Tillman has recently burst onto the scene, showing the playmaking ability the Browns drafted him for in 2023. It's a talented Browns team that has suffered from Watson's poor play, but the infusion of Winston's arm and Nick Chubb's return could vault this team into an underdog victory any day of the week.

The Chargers have finally answered back to all the doubts regarding their passing offense with two straight games of moving the ball through the air. The Browns have been porous in the secondary so far this season, so going eight or nine men in the box like Arizona and New Orleans to do would be ill advised. This could finally be the game where Charger fans see the marriage of the passing and running offense flourish in a single outing.

The most recent encounter between these two teams occurred at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 9, 2022. Jacoby Brissett was the quarterback for Cleveland, and it turned out to be one of the most thrilling games of the season. The Chargers narrowly secured a victory over the Browns, with rookie kicker Cade York missing a 54-yard game-winning field goal as time expired. The Chargers departed Cleveland with a 30-28 triumph. However, both teams have changed drastically since then.

The divorce between the Browns and Deshaun Watson appears imminent. Watson was the first and only quarterback to receive a fully guaranteed contract, and the Browns possessed a talented team poised to become formidable contenders in the AFC. Regrettably, personal off-field issues and injuries have derailed his tenure in Cleveland. When he was able to play, he consistently failed to meet expectations, and the honeymoon phase seems to be ending. Joe Flacco is no longer available to salvage this team, as he is now trying to guide the Colts back on track following Anthony Richardson’s benching last week.

Last Sunday, Jameis Winston emerged from the bench and led Cleveland to an impressive victory over the Baltimore Ravens. He has demonstrated his ability to start and perform slightly above average as a quarterback in this league. The Ravens' defense provided Winston with ample space in the pocket with minimal pressure. He has a strong arm and the capability to make plays from various locations on the field.

Nevertheless, the Chargers enter Cleveland this time under the leadership of Jim Harbaugh, with a new identity and a record of 4-3 following a dominant victory over the New Orleans Saints. The Chargers are eager to get on a roll and stack some wins. Throughout the season, they have consistently showcased an enhanced a stout defensive line capable of applying pressure on opposing quarterbacks. It is imperative for the team to halt the run promptly to prevent Winston from using his preferred play-action pass to throw downfield. He has adequate weapons on the outside to execute this strategy effectively.

While Jameis Winston excels at slinging the ball, this tendency sometimes leads to him throwing into tight windows and double coverage, which increases the likelihood of interceptions. Notably, the Baltimore Ravens could have secured at least two interceptions had they been able to hold onto poorly thrown passes by Winston. Therefore, it is crucial for Jessie Minter, who has demonstrated exceptional coaching skills as the Chargers' defensive coordinator, to devise a comprehensive game plan. This plan should incorporate various strategies, generate significant pressure on Winston, and effectively halt the run.

The Chargers boast arguably the most formidable tackle duo in the NFL. While Slater is an All-Pro, I am particularly focused on Joe Alt. Despite sustaining a knee injury in the Pittsburgh game, Alt demonstrated remarkable resilience, shutting down Maxx Crosby in the opener, handling Jadeveon Clowney the following week, and then matching up favorably in Week 4 against T.J. Watt. Alt managed to limit Watt to one sack before exiting the game. He will now face another formidable opponent in Myles Garrett, which is something to keep an eye on.

The Chargers' defense, led by Jessie Minter, has been remarkably effective, limiting opponents to only 12 points per game. On a positive note, Justin Herbert appears to be fully healthy since the opener against the Raiders, where he dealt with plantar fasciitis. When Herbert is in optimal health, the Chargers' chances of success against any team in the league significantly increase. He exudes greater confidence, has been observed directing players to ensure proper alignment, celebrating touchdown catches, having fun, and escaping the pocket to generate substantial runs when under pressure—displaying impressive speed for a 6’6” quarterback.

Furthermore, Herbert has shown no lingering effects from the high ankle sprain that persisted throughout the previous month. Additionally, the Chargers' offense is experiencing a resurgence, with several receivers returning to health at the opportune moment. Anticipate Herbert’s continued assault on opposing defenses, especially as he capitalizes on the absence of Cleveland’s leading tackler and Pro Bowl linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who is sidelined due to a neck injury sustained during a collision with Ravens running back Derrick Henry last week.

J.K. Dobbins should see an increase in his workload this game to mitigate the impact on the Browns’ pass rush, particularly Myles Garrett, who is tasked with containing Justin Herbert. Herbert looks poised to elevate this offense to a new level as he fully recovers and regains his form. This is good news for the Chargers—and bad news for the Browns.
