DENVER, CO – OCTOBER 13: Chargers defensive tackle Teair Tart (90) chases Broncos quarterback Bo Nix (10) during a game between the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers on October 13, 2024, at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, CO. (Photo by Kevin Langley/Icon Sportswire)

The best time for your worst loss of the season is the game before a short week.

The Bolts had no time to sulk this week after the Buccaneers dismantled the Chargers 40-17 on Sunday. While there are always lessons to be learned in a loss, there are some games that an athlete would rather just put behind them and forget, at least temporarily, and the schedule-Gods answered that prayer for the Chargers this week.

The Denver Broncos are visiting the Chargers after enjoying the other side of a blowout victory against the Colts, besting them 31-13. They are playing on a short week as well, and have the disadvantage of having squeeze travel in this short turnaround.

The last time these teams met, the Chargers defense completely bottled the Broncos offense up, holding them scoreless until the fourth quarter when falling into a “prevent” defense allowed Denver to rack up 17 junk-time points. Looking at the final score of 23-16 would suggest an evenly fought match, but the tape told a very different story.

Since then, Bo Nix has become a more efficient and capable passer. At the time of that game, he had only gone over 220 passing yards once. Since then, he has managed to go over 270 yards four times. While he still has a long way to go in his development, he has started pairing some downfield success with the playmaking abilities his legs provide. The Chargers defense needs to put up a similarly dominant performance by staying disciplined in their pass rush, containing Nix in the pocket, and not letting him scramble and extend.

The Chargers offense needs to rise above the challenges it’s interior offensive line and receivers have presented it with. Hayden Hurst is returning tonight which may inject some talent onto the field, it’s hard to see him as an upgrade to Stone Smartt, who has actually be a reliable target the last couple weeks. All eyes will be on Greg Roman to see if he leans into the running game again after straying from it despite his receivers’ struggles, or if one of these receivers can step up and take some pressure off Ladd McConkey.

Here are the inactives for tonight’s game:

It’s a punch to the gut to see Elijah Molden and Cam Hart out. The secondary was getting alarmingly thin before losing Hart, who has been a breakout sensation this season. His ability to physically lock down “X” receivers has been a key ingredient to this team’s defensive success, and compliments fellow rookie Tarheeb Still’s playmaking ability in the slot… his impact can’t be replaced by simply shifting Tarheeb to the outside.

Elijah Molden’s absence will also be felt, as the Chargers are also without Alohi Gilman.

After a rough, rough few weeks, the Bolts would put themselves in an excellent position with a “Dub” before their mini-bye. They would be in position to potentially clinch their playoff spot with some outside help, but most importantly, can wash the taste out of that brutal Week 15 loss and focus on resetting and getting healthy down the stretch.

So you come on here saying you donโ€™t want to stir the pot, call out Roman haters, then proceed to defend him. Got it.ย

This was one of my favorite victories in a long time – probably since the KC TNF/MW81 2 point. Congrats to the boys for bouncing back and Herbert was just tremendous. Sooooooo….lets move on to everyone favorite subject:
OK Roman haters. You have time on your hands with our mini bye. Please list for me what you would do differently with this crap IOL and talent deficient WRs and RBs (Dobbins withstanding) plus gimpy QB for many games. I simply dont get it. Its so easy to point the finger at him.ย  Watching the ATL game live I saw what the tools looked like up close and personal. It was subpar on every level. My one complaint has been how he abandons the run on occasion too early but how do we not know if that JH10 checking out.ย
EVERY year we all complain about the OC. EVERY YEAR! Look at Kellen Moore – he has a legit OL and that team is humming. Point me in the direction of an OC out there with similar talent doing it right
I come wanting to be educated and in peace. Not to stir the pot. Im a willing and capable listener BUT I will push back on soft arguments and there have been plenty out there on the web regarding Roman.
My take is hes doing the best he can with the tools he has (limited as they are). BTW hes not going anywhere. This idea that JH10 is getting a new OC every year is over

pistol495 The argument is always going to come down to hypotheticals because of the nature of injuries/signings/coaching decisions etc.
ย
Things pre-season I would have wanted to see more of: Derius Davis in the offense and more spread formations to create light boxes. Nobody respects a team who doesn’t actually give the ball on certain pre-snap motion looks and DD has always been someone we should bring on the field every 5th play to do nothing more than speed down the seam on the Boundary. Knowing that you want to use Run-Heavy sets you’ve got to balance that out with the spread game.
ย
Things that are dumb AF: 2 man-route options with 8 in Pass Pro; Heavy formations for injured RBs, Flood concepts with no depth on routes (leads to 1 man in space defending 2 players type stuff); too many slow skill players on the field on pass downs
ย
I think signing Bozeman is a move that they should have known better about especially in relation to the Centers available in the draft. You don’t want to force things, but you also went into the season expecting Coaching to be able to change LG-C-RG while hoping Alt would be who he was. Only the rookie performed to expectation so on the whole, the OL being what it is comes down to the Coaches and Hortiz and that falls as much on Harbaugh now.

Duck07 regarding the passing concepts, I think that expecting a scheme from Roman that optimizes Herbieโ€™s talents is beyond Roman, despite the few, long-overdue adjustments in the last game. We all want a legitimate running game, thatโ€™s something good for the team. But when the chips are down, and itโ€™s 3rd and long, you need great pass plays called to take advantage of one of the best passing QBs in the league.
In addition to upgrades on offense in the off season, Harbaugh needs to seriously ask himself if Roman is the best OC for Herbert and the team. If the answer is no, then he should make a change now, even though it sucks cycling to another new OC again. Herbie is in his prime. Letโ€™s not waste any more years.ย

Duck07 Some great points thanks. But in the end you cant take advantage of the best QB in the league if hes hut or your IOL and RBs cant block. The Roman hate should really only come out when hes had the full complement of OL and skill players and the results are similar. We all know they wont be.

Sorry not sorry but coaches are also responsible for maximizing their players rather than using an injury excuse.

If you need multiple starting caliber RBs to make your offense work, somethings wrong with it.

If you signed your chosen Center and he’s a liability, thats on you as a Coach too.

If you bring in zero outside help at WR, you better have a plan on how to maximize the talent you have.

The constant missing halves of football, that also falls on the coaches.

Duck07 this is exactly what I’ve been saying. You tailor your scheme to fit the players you have, not what you want. Roman hasn’t. Going, at one point, 6 quarters only scoring 2 points with Herbert as your QB is unacceptable.

One other thing about last nightโ€™s game. I re-watched it after getting home. It is clear Tart is far, far better than Ottito. The Donkeys OLine couldnโ€™t block him and he was getting into the backfield often.ย
Iโ€™ve never understood why Ottito starts over Tart, but Tart has overtaken Ottito on snap counts and the team is slowly raising his snap counts, started the year in the mid teens and now at high 20โ€™s. The only explanation I can think of is Tartโ€™s conditioning doesnโ€™t allow him to play more snaps. But the dude is absolutely wrecking plays.ย

Hat tip to Roman. First time all year the offense plays a complete game. But Iโ€™m not ready to forgive the 14 prior games with poor play calling. I hope yesterday was a turning point for Roman because Herbert and the team need it.ย
Great game last night. Loved seeing the Donkeys fans walk out of SoFi with their heads hung low, after all the shit they talked at halftime.ย

The most salient point here is that for the first time in forever, the Chargers D has made meaningful halftime adjustments and shut the opponent down.

That’s the single most important takeaway so far. Brighter times ahead.

I get it, but that a Devner FG against being 7 down, and now a TD away from being a 3 pt lead. Itโ€™s a great conversation to have in the offseason and practiceโ€”and Iโ€™m sure they haveโ€”but personally Iโ€™m against the 2pt before the 4th quarter. Thatโ€™s just me.
