The best time for your worst loss of the season is the game before a short week.
The Bolts had no time to sulk this week after the Buccaneers dismantled the Chargers 40-17 on Sunday. While there are always lessons to be learned in a loss, there are some games that an athlete would rather just put behind them and forget, at least temporarily, and the schedule-Gods answered that prayer for the Chargers this week.
The Denver Broncos are visiting the Chargers after enjoying the other side of a blowout victory against the Colts, besting them 31-13. They are playing on a short week as well, and have the disadvantage of having squeeze travel in this short turnaround.
The last time these teams met, the Chargers defense completely bottled the Broncos offense up, holding them scoreless until the fourth quarter when falling into a “prevent” defense allowed Denver to rack up 17 junk-time points. Looking at the final score of 23-16 would suggest an evenly fought match, but the tape told a very different story.
Since then, Bo Nix has become a more efficient and capable passer. At the time of that game, he had only gone over 220 passing yards once. Since then, he has managed to go over 270 yards four times. While he still has a long way to go in his development, he has started pairing some downfield success with the playmaking abilities his legs provide. The Chargers defense needs to put up a similarly dominant performance by staying disciplined in their pass rush, containing Nix in the pocket, and not letting him scramble and extend.
The Chargers offense needs to rise above the challenges it’s interior offensive line and receivers have presented it with. Hayden Hurst is returning tonight which may inject some talent onto the field, it’s hard to see him as an upgrade to Stone Smartt, who has actually be a reliable target the last couple weeks. All eyes will be on Greg Roman to see if he leans into the running game again after straying from it despite his receivers’ struggles, or if one of these receivers can step up and take some pressure off Ladd McConkey.
Here are the inactives for tonight’s game:
It’s a punch to the gut to see Elijah Molden and Cam Hart out. The secondary was getting alarmingly thin before losing Hart, who has been a breakout sensation this season. His ability to physically lock down “X” receivers has been a key ingredient to this team’s defensive success, and compliments fellow rookie Tarheeb Still’s playmaking ability in the slot… his impact can’t be replaced by simply shifting Tarheeb to the outside.
Elijah Molden’s absence will also be felt, as the Chargers are also without Alohi Gilman.
After a rough, rough few weeks, the Bolts would put themselves in an excellent position with a “Dub” before their mini-bye. They would be in position to potentially clinch their playoff spot with some outside help, but most importantly, can wash the taste out of that brutal Week 15 loss and focus on resetting and getting healthy down the stretch.

Canโt win when you canโt stop the other team from scoring. Pathetic. Romans excuse is the personnel. Whatโs Minters?
Payton putting Minter over his knee
For the past three weeks, Harbaugh has been making a face on the sidelines like his son just pissed his pants while showing his goat at the county fair.
As a researcher, a long-time educator, a curious guy, and an NFL fan, I look forward to spending three hours tomorrow learning about that free kick rule.
As a Chargers fan, Iโm praying that Harbaugh found a way in ten minutes to get his team to believe they just stole three points and that an eight point deficit at half is a victory, and now they need to spend 30 minutes shoving it down their throats.
yes to everything
Nice way to end the half, but I have no confidence Minter can stop the Broncos
He hasn’t since 4th Q in the first game.
Dicker. Our kicker.
We have our Tucker
This is still Chargering. Only this team.
Chargereering?
Oh NOW a TO???
Shit. Well, at least Harbaugh can go to half with all those TOs.
Downright Lynn-ian of late.
Seven here: Iโm all in.
Three here: Iโm still gigging.
Zero here: I mean, how much can one man bear?
Need at least 3 this drive because we know we donโt score in the second halfย
Great play by Deane Leonard. But when your defense draws its bright line on Deane Leonard making a playโฆ Yeesh.
But early season MASH was hilarious. As years went on, it got kinda tired.
A stop? A STOP?????
2nd and 18 might as well be 2nd and inches
Of note: Broncos receive the kickoff in the second half.
I’m gonna call it a win if they don’t get blown out again.
I smell another ass whoopin.
When was the last time you showered? ๐คฃ
Donโt rush it, Buck. Take your time.
Anyone think Denver punts this game?
Playoff teams win games that start like this. Letโs go!
Note: theyโre not bringing their New York bigwig to explain that crap call. Weโll see what happens after commercial. But Meinerz was engaged in a block as much as I was on that play.
They did get back to it. Consensus: Chargers got screwed.
To their credit: They did.
To their discredit: Didnโt change a thing.
Oh yeah….big comeback. 🙄
66 yards on two plays. Ouch.
That missed block on Matlock is was absolutely brutal. I’m under the impression the fullback move was made late since it was hidden from the media for so long… so I’ve really wanted to wait to evaluate him until next year after he’s had a full TC to practice and learn the position… but MAN that was bad.
One stop. Letโs go.
We’ve beaten who we should for the most part. That’s not insignificant improvement.
Why not sneak it? Itโs 3rd and inches
Hate to say it but whatever magic the defense had earlier in the season is history. Our best hope tonight is going to be a shootout. Yeah, unlikely, I know.
I don’t think that’s completely true. The Chargers D held some good teams to unusually low point totals. Those games were lost due to offensive incompetence.
Minter turned into a pumpkin. Defense is a fraud unless itโs playing a shit team.ย
Too easy.
Sure, why not? Have another first.
Looks like the Staley defense.ย
Gotta see if Minter can get a stop
Nice effort from Gus. that’s a tough go, running at the Broncos on the goal line.
See, Roman? You can.
Ok. Long game. Bad start, but here we go!
ย
But …. Gus?
ย
GUS!!!
At least we get to watch a playoff team play in SoFi tonight.ย
How’s that taste, Jim? Like Roman’s ass?
ย
Oughtta spit it out.
Well this games over. We go 3 and out and Minter canโt stop a nosebleed.ย
To be fair, it was only a sniffle. No blood.
Wow who knew throwing to RB could be effective?
Man, I love having a dominating running game.
Ohโฆ wait.
Now Minter being used as a hand puppetย
Roman getting to see how a real offense operatesย
Derius Davis on 3rd and 3. Inspired.
Great call Greg.
3 and out. Unreal.ย
Hopefully they win tonight so when I see them next week in NE it could be for a playoff clincher!!!
Just made a mess of teriyaki beef, poured my drink, feel prepped for my 8am meeting tomorrow. Bolt Up!
I bet a former Oregon QB wins tonight!!!
Probably wearing #10 .
LT at the game….looks like he could still play.
Man I despise the Broncos….Bolt the fuck up, Chargers!!!!
