The stage is set in Sรฃo Paulo as the Chargers square off against the Chiefs in one of the most anticipated matchups of the season. With storylines up and down the roster, tonightโs game should give us plenty to talk about.
Mekhi Bectonโs Status
The Bolts got a bit of a curveball this morning as Mekhi Becton was added to the injury report with an illness. He was spotted warming up on the field in workout shorts, but the team also called up Foster Sarrell from the practice squad as a game-day activation. Is Sarrell simply insurance in case Becton canโt finish, or are the Chargers leaning toward resting him completely while he recovers?
Interior Line vs. Chris Jones
Even if Becton plays, the spotlight may shine brightest inside. Can the rest of the interior offensive line hold up against Chris Jones, who has a history of wrecking games almost singlehandedly? With Trey Pipkins now bumped outside, fans will be watching closely to see if the reshuffled unit can prevent Jones from dictating the flow of the offense.
Keenan Allen Back in Powder Blue
Regardless of the scoreboard, one of the highlights tonight will be seeing Keenan Allen back in Chargers powder blues after his stint in Chicago. Expect plenty of emotion when he takes the field.
Running Back Depth Questions
The decision not to activate Miller-Hines raises eyebrows. That leaves Omarion Hampton, Najee Harris, and Hassan Haskins as the only running backs in uniform. Coaches have insisted Najee is ready to contribute, but will we actually see him carry a significant load? Or will Haskins be leaned on heavily to spell Hampton?
Jamaree Caldwellโs Regular Season Debut
All eyes will be on Jamaree Caldwell, who makes his first regular-season appearance after turning heads in the preseason. His size, athleticism, and relentless motor made him a preseason standout โ now itโs time to see if that carries over against one of the AFCโs toughest opponents.
Derwin James vs. Travis Kelce, Round [Next]
It wouldnโt be Chargers-Chiefs without the inevitable highlight reel of Derwin James vs. Travis Kelce. Will tonight give us another iconic clash between the leagueโs most physical safety and its most dominant tight end?
Injury Reports
๐ฌ Your turn, StormCloud: What storyline are you most eager to see unfold tonight?

Perryman out indefinitely…high ankle sprain. Who’s up with Colson IR’d?
They have Dye as LB2 and Wax as LB3 while Perryman and Colson are out. That should be more than good enough.
Keep feeding Herbie Beers!! lol

A few notes about the game after I re-watched the broadcast (haven’t had time to watch all-22):
Regarding Slater-Alt, I don’t think Slater ever starts at LT for the Chargers again, unless Alt gets hurt.
I agree with all of this. Its strange how one day, you’re among the best and highest paid players at your position, and the next, you’re in injury prone cap space eater. I wonder if Rayshawn would be interested in playing RT or if there’s a trade market for him after he’s healthy..
The cap hit for trading him is prohibitive for at least a couple years. By then, he will presumably be playing again. So either:
All true and, while the team is fortunate to have Alt to step in, it just sucks for Slater.
It does, but the contract takes away a lot of the sting. Assuming the team commits to Alt at LT, the right thing for Slater is to embrace the challenge of becoming an All Pro RT. He might never get there, but that should be his new goal in that scenario.
I’m surprised everyone seems to agree that Alt has locked down LT after one game. It might become true, but the everyone’s (other sites too) is surprising.
Alt is very good, let’s see if he continues the All-Pro level for the rest of the season.
Even if Alt is an All-Pro, you move him back to RT if Slater shows a high level in practice coming back from that devastating injury.
I do believe Slater has the ability to play RT, or even either G, but Alt has already showed that ability. RT is more important than 10 years ago. It is far too early to start any Alt to permanent LT, IMO, but I seem to be in the minority.

Holy crap….the Bills….๐ฏ
That was a heavyweight fight. What a great game to watch between two talented, well coached teams.
Great game. I can’t believe how fast Henry is. To be that good at that age…. Wow.
Weird seeing Palmer and Bosa on the Bills.
Palmer made a couple of savvy plays. Honestly didn’t notice Joey that much. Thats probably on me….can’t say I miss him.
He did have a strip sack of Lamar in the 4th. I was watching him on the snaps, he still has that great burst and power. He did get into the backfield a bunch of times, but he couldn’t corral Lamar.
My main fantasy league switched to a SuperFlex format, and we went all-in to get Lamar and Josh. That was peak cinema for us (its a father-son co-manager league)
I donโt love that the Donkeys and Vegas won, but the small consolation is that for a few days, the Chiefs are alone in the cellar. And have to take on Philly next week.
Good to see the Texans lose one, too, which may matter come January.
Not for nothing, this is the first year in nearly 30 that Iโve been fantasy football free. Iโm sure you all watched my retirement ceremony. But if some Chargers fan doesnโt have a team name of The Sadd McDonkeys, theyโre missing an opportunity.
Right there with ya. I know I’m in the minority here but I hate the Broncos worse than the Raiders.
I think that’s probably because the Raiders have been shittier for much longer. Denver won a SB in 2016. before KC went on their current run. When was the last time the raiders were in the SB? I thijnk it was 2001, the year Gruden went to Tampa and beat the shit out of them, and the last time they won the SB was 1984.
It’s a lot easier to feel sorry for teams that suck, especially when we Charger fans were straddled with the Telesco/John Spanos fueled mediocrity that was the 13 seasons prior to Harbaugh.
I’m hopeful that Friday ushered in a new era in the AFC, with the Chiefs taking a step back and the Chargers taking a step forward.
Nope. Maybe part of it is because I’ve never been exposed to the in-state rivalry slash enmity.
I despise the Broncos for a couple of reasons….
That cut-block coaching POS Shanahan. That BS injured one of my favorite Chargers ever, Jamal Williams.
Their smug fucking fans.
And now Sean Payton, who fits well with their history of asshole coaches.
I certainly don’t like the Raiders and would almost never pull for them (unless it helps the Chargers), but my disdain for the Broncos has nothing to do with any pity for the Raiders.
FTR. And fuck the rented mules even more.
And Go Bolts!!
Go Titans! (That doesnโt feel good but fuuuuuuck the donkeys)
I just watched the game again. I had forgotten about the full sequence leading up to Hampton’s run at the end of the first half.
On 2nd down at the Chiefs 21 yard line, Herbert allowed the play clock to expire for a delay of game penalty. I don’t know why Harbaugh didn’t call timeout, but Herbert himself should have done it. Either way, the clock would have stopped, but why give up 5 yards to move from 2nd and 11 to 2nd and 16 with 59 seconds remaining? It made it less likely they would actually get a first down and be able to push for a TD. Had they already settled for a FG?
On the next play, Herbert was pressured, stepped up as if to try to run up the middle, and then tried a last second flip pass to McConkey that wasn’t close. He could have just taken what he could get, worst case would have been no gain or a loss of 1, but the clock would have continued running.
Then Hampton’s run was on 3rd down.
Hampton absolutely made a mistake, but Herbert and the coaches share the blame for how that played out.
I can give Hampton a rookie pass. The rest was really poor decision making by experienced players/staff. Clock mgmt reared its head a few times last year too.
A few things with that sequence that I questioned in real time:
I’m gonna give the rook 1 pass. Yes, he gets the talk. But c’mon…it’s a big stage, regardless of how long he’s played. Herbert shoulda known better too.
Enjoying my morning coffee on a victory Saturday. A few thoughts on the game (prior to re-watching):
As others stated in the thread, this game felt different. I was pretty confident the Chargers were going to win by the end of the first half (even though they gave up a cheap 3 points). Excited to see what the Chargers can do against a bad Raiders team. My guess is that Harbaugh is going to shove Carroll’s head right into the steaming pile of shit that is the Raiders roster and blow them out.
You and I were of a similar mindset re: Keenan….hated when he left but wasn’t sure how he’d fit with McConkey. Never happier to be wrong. Welcome home, Slayer!
Have they figured out how to best utilize QJ? I’m not declaring him “fixed”….I think there will always be some drop issues. But there’s also a valuable skillset here to be incorporated.
The OL held up pretty well. Frankly, I fully expected Spags to pin their ears back more in the 2nd half. Glad they didn’t.
Apparently Roman can learn. He must have felt Herbie’s arm (and legs!!) gave them the better chance to win, for whatever reason….Najee’s injury/rust, Omarrion being a rookie, the OL, all of the above. Happy to see him stick with the hot hand and not turtle. Still, the run game will need to get figured out.
A few real brain farts. Clock mgmt. in the late second half. Safety breakdown letting Brown get behind them. Tart’s slap….luckily he wasn’t tossed as he played a big defensive role. Dunno what precipitated that reaction and sure don’t mind Kelce’s punk ass being the landing spot, but that could’ve been more costly.
Mahomes (and Kelce) are gonna make plays. Should there have been a spy on Mahomes? Possibly. At least more focus on maintaining lanes/contain. But like it or not, he’s gonna make plays. Last night, we made more. โก๏ธโก๏ธโก๏ธ Big break that both Rice and Worthy were out.
Herbert wasn’t perfect but damn good. I’m still confused about the stated offensive identity but glad they put the game on Herbie’s arm last night. He definitely answered the call. Forcing the run would have almost certainly ended with a much sadder result.
1-0. Feels real good.
1-0 and in sole possession of 1st place in the AFC west. When was the last time the Chargers were alone in 1st place?
It’s been far too long.
I had a work emergency and missed most of the game, and a promised date night with my wife, but she let us go somewhere with the game on TV. I cant wait to re-watch it though!
Kyle, Kyle, Kyle. A date night on the night of the Brazil game? My man, I am married to and get the date night thing, but you really need to plan better. I get it if it was a family function (wedding, birthday, school event), but Week 1? Unacceptable!!! ๏ปฟ ๐ ๏ปฟ
Pregnant wife + babysitter schedules means I have to make sacrifices brother ๏ปฟ ๐ ๏ปฟ Just happy I was able to catch glimpses of it!
But hey – silver lining is Zeina is giving me a HUGE hall pass at the end of the month. I’m flying out for two nights to visit my brother in New York, and we’re going to the Giants/Bolts game live ๐
Kyle, I am going to the game as well. Not sure yet if it is just with my son or some of my Giant buddies as well. We have to have a beer together. I think I am taking the train to the game so we will have to invade someone’s tailgate!!
I love it! I’ll be rolling four deep – and I also know
Stacey Mallory (Stacey) will be there as well. It would be AWESOME to get to a tailgate together and sling back a couple beers!
Ow damn, I am going to that game as well! I’m convincing my friends to buy tickets for the Die Hard Bolt Club tailgate. Are you guys going to that one?
I think the DHBC is also organizing a get together on Saturday evening in the city.
Would be awesome to meet up for a couple of beers and Chargers talk.
I havenโt heard of that, but I would be down for sure. You, me, Kyle and anyone else going should definitely do a tailgate. That would be fantastic. Let me know the details of the tailgate.
I am not sure if sharing the link to the event is allowed per the rules of this website.
Kyle DeDiminicantanio y could you let me know whether that’s ok or not?
Of course! Post away!
All rights, here’s the link. I obviously have no experience going to a tailgate So I can’t vouch for the quality. There clearly will be beer and a bit of food so for me that should be enough ๐

Forgot to mention there is a promocode for 20$ off: CHARGERSNYC.
Hey guys – I’ll be at this tailgate with my family if anyone wants to cruise!
We bought our tickets. All-inclusive. ๐
Hmmmm….I really wanna meet/hang. This could happen.
Kyle we will definitely get together at Met Life. I will DM you my Ph# so you can text me your plans. Canโt wait to see you there!!!
Hmmm….I’ll just be getting home….
Family.
Trust.
Respect.
Keenan had, besides the yards and a TD, 5 first downs with 3 of them on 3rd down. That’s his real value to this team, IMO. Use his savvy and route running to keep the chains moving. We don’t have to only rely on Ladd or a punishing rushing attack to get long drives.
With KLS (‘Dre) and Harris showing promise as X’s – which impact seems a bit overexaggerated – we don’t need Mike Williams as much as we do Keenan. He showed up and will come for Gates’ reception record this season!
Bolt Up!!
Good lord. I just finished and Iโm full of beef ribs, beer, and good cheer. I canโt wait to get to the breakdown, but Iโve got to go to bed.
Briefly:
Great team effort. Great ability to keep stemming the tide of momentum. Still stuff to work on? Absolutely. But, man. Beat the Chiefs at โhomeโ a twelve hour flight away from home to start the season, and this is a true victory.
Family! Trust! Respect!
Haven’t read any comments yet. Awesome to win and also be able to point to things to work on without having lost.
It could have so easily been a much bigger win:
Just those two things going differently could have made this a blowout. Watching the game, I never really felt any doubt the Chargers were going to win. I had “Chargering” in the back of my mind when it got down to 27-21, but I wasn’t truly worried.
Without rewatching, looking at grades, etc., I was impressed with the pass protection for Herbert. It seemed better than I was expecting.
Run blocking, not so much, and I felt like they really missed Fisk, who was on the inactive list. IMO they need to find a way to make him active next week.
Totally agree. I will be interested to see if Roman has changed his philosophy to make this a pass first offense with Herbert? Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see the passing game so prominent. But remember, its week one. They have had months to come up with a gameplan and after seeing the Chiefs twice last year, maybe they felt this was the best way to beat them week one? Not saying I mind it. The best teams have a franchise QB and they run the offense through them. Glad to see maybe Roman realizes this and will lean on Herbert the same way.
I was suggesting to Ryan on our pod that they may opt to pass more because of the injury to Slater. PFF grades Slater as a better run blocker – but I’ve never really felt that way when watching him. I just don’t think our line with Slater out of the picture is the dominating force up front to create lanes against elite defenses – so I’m really stoked to see Greg adjust his philosophy a bit and put his trust in Herbie.
Feels weird seeing the Chargers fully finish a game like that. I love it!
How sweet it is!!
What a fucking win. I stunned.
Herbert doing his best Mahomes impression!
Well, he WAS running for his life, but he also won the game. Well done. That’s clutch in my book.
Great drive starter. Good play call.
OK, well, this is it. This is where Herbert has the rep, rightly or wrongly, of not being clutch. let’s see.
If he’s not running for his life
More like running for first downs!
Let’s hope Roman gives him a chance for him to show it
What are the safeties even doing on that Brown catch
God fucking damn it
It’s crazy how my mind is now figuring out what cruel way the Chargers can lose this game.
Please play sound defense now!
anybody else think that 9-point lead is going to factor in at the end?
Beautiful!
Minter canโt stop Reid. Itโs pretty simple. Reid just outclasses him. You figure maybe, just maybe you use a fucking spy in Mahomes on 3rd down? Nah. Just let him keep fucking you on rushes. Unreal.
Well to be fair they only have 18 points so far. I completely agree that they are being beaten by the same thing time and time again
That Chiefs right tackle looks to be holding on almost every play
Holy shit Mahomes is just too good
Wouldn’t you go for 2 here?
interesting. Up by 8 is a good place to be.
I guess. I would like a 2 possession lead more. Don’t know what the numbers say about a situation like that though
Great play call by Roman. Hate the dude, but that was money.
That indeed was well designed. That being said we should still be very appreciative about the way Herbert makes that throw look so easy
bad effort by QJ.
That pass to Keenan is a TD.
Apparently it is!
What kind of fucking spot is that
It’s crazy to see how these games against the Chiefs always seem the follow the exact same pattern. Chiefs are sloppy to start, Chargers take some but not full advantage
Chargers make a mistake to get the Chiefs in the game
Chiefs take the opportunity thanks to Mahomes’ genius
Chargers offense falls flat.
Really would like for the Chargers to break the pattern here
You forgot one thing. Like oh, say, an uncalled PI on the Chiefs.
Oh yes indeed!
Turn out the lights. Rinse and repeat
Minter getting bent over
Schooled
This has all the makings of a typical Chiefs Chargers game. Dominate stats but donโt score much, make a few small dumb mistakes and lose it at the end.
Bad call by Roman. Just call a dive up the middle.
Where the fuck are the chiefs. They can just say that they need more time?
Lol. “Miscommunication” Chiefs just wanted more time. Bullshit
I really hope they don’t go all conservative and move too far toward the run/protect the lead mentality. I think KC is gonna bring heat on Herbert and look downfield more on offense.
Hey guys….watching on my phone so jumping in at halftime.
Horrible clock mgmt at the end….woof.
OL holding up reasonably well. I expect Spags to bring more heat 2nd half.
Surprised by the passing emphasis. Not unhappy, just surprised. Herb looks good, just missed that possible TD to McConkey otherwise pretty sharp. Looks good running.
Rice and now Worthy out is a gift.
QJ….keep that up!
Second half adjustments are key.
That was horrible clock management
Rookie mistake
Yeah but the whole end of that drive was mishandled. Delay of game penalty, the shovel pass and then Hampton running out of bounds
Yep. I can kinda forgive the rook. The rest less so.
Time for a 5 minute drive
Here we go. Death by 1000 paper cuts
Damn it what a run by Justin. Correct call unfortunately
Jalen Herbert.
Did zion miss the block or hampton the hole?
Really would have liked at least 1 first down there
I’m pumped to see QJ holding on to the catches, and a good YAC as well onthe first one.
All right Storm Cloud peeps. First game thread of the year. Letโs hope itโs a winning one!!! Hopefully Buck gets a chance to hop on.
