We’ve just releasedย Episode 121ย of theย Thunder Down Under Chargers Podcast.
Our synopsis forย Episode 121ย is below:
Sรฃo Paulo, Brazil will hold a special place in Chargersโ fans hearts after Herbert & the Boltsโ 27-21 Wk 1 statement win against the reigning conference winning Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night. In their first victory against Andy Reid & Patrick Mahomes since 2021, Justin Herbert passed for 318 yards, 3 TDs and added 32 yds with his legs, including the 19 yd scamper with 2:14 remaining in the game that sealed victory at Corinthians Stadium. Harbaughโs Bolts controlled the contest from stat to finish, and whether Herbertโs performance was fuelled by ESPN Ryan Clarkโs pre-game comments (โwhenever it matters, [Herbert]โs been terribleโ), last seasonโs disappointing playoff exit at Houston, or his new blossoming off-field romance, the NFL should be terrified of what #10 appears primed to do this season for the Powder Blues. Dropping this here for now, will share more in a post later. Just spent about 3 hrs. in the HoF. Very cool. One of my favorite interactive exhibits was getting to be a replay official on past plays, none that I recalled. Perhaps I’ve found my new calling….6 for 6, baby!! ๐ช๐พ lol
I don’t wanna get out ahead of anything already planned, but can we get a Raiders week thread going somewhere? Cuz FTR. โก๏ธโก๏ธโก๏ธ
Hey buddy – I’ll try to get something up tomorrow morning. Worked killed me this week, but I’ll have that and
Ryan Watkins and my podcast up tomorrow!
Does this work as an upload folder for you Buck? I can also give you an email address where you can write about and post some of your favorite photos, and it will turn it into am article. Let me know!

No worries about the Raider thread my friend. I just didn’t wanna jump the gun on anything planned. ๐
Backtracking a bit today from Canton to Columbus to see one of my favorite songwriters tonight. I’ll take a look at the drive link when I slow down a bit. Thanks!!
Interesting comment on the screens. Hadn’t recognized that. But the JTO video that showed all of the route concepts made it seem like their playcalls were really good, consistently with multiple options for Herbert. Hopefully not just one game.
Al asked, can you change up the roster after that performance against the Chiefs? Absolutely, gotta get Fisk active, as I posted in my comments after the game. They clearly missed his run blocking.
Another good pod.
Yes, I will hold off any non-screen criticism for a different week. Wouldn’t be very charitable when almost every play he called worked and much of it was brilliantly designed (as you mention).
I thought Fisk should have been active. For the record, it’s more of an Australian rules football comment. In our sport (22 players), there’s a tradition of maintaining an ‘unchanged line-up’ if your team has just had a sensational win, even if some individual players underperformed. It reflects a collectivist mindset. I think It’s a bit silly and not applicable to the NFL but felt like asking the question anyway.
Out of interest, what (and how many) changes would you make to the 46 this week?
Thanks!
Well, first, the Chargers elevated LS Lovato and T Sarell. Then they made these players inactive:
TE Fisk
TE Gadsden
T Sarell
Edge Kennard
IDL Jones
CB Reed
S Mickens
First off, it kind of begs the question, did they elevate Sarell just to be inactive and reduce the number of other inactives from 7 to 6? It helps on that front, though I wouldn’t expect that to be their motivation. More likely, they didn’t know about Becton’s status and thought they might need to make him inactive, in which case they presumably would have started Salyer and wanted Sarell as an emergency backup… then they realized Becton could play and didn’t need Sarell.
I assume they will elevate Lovato again.
I assume they will not feel the need to elevate Sarell again, which means they could elevate another player… but they don’t really need to do so.
I assume they once again make TE Gadsden, Edge Kennard, and CB Reed inactive. Assuming they don’t put Perryman on IR, he will be inactive. That’s 4.
As an aside, I think Gadsden is going to have a hard time finding the active gameday roster this season given the other pass catching talent on the roster and the normal active roster spot crunch. (Barring injuries ahead of him, of course.)
I could see the Chargers making Mickens active and Williamson inactive. Williamson didn’t really do much with his active status last week, and, frankly, I think Mickens is a better player. Either way, one of them will be inactive. That’s 5.
Eboigbe didn’t do much. With Jeanty on the docket, I could see Eboigbe inactive and Jones active. That’s 6.
I don’t think the Chargers really need to have WR Harris active to play 5 snaps on offense and 5 on special teams, as he played last week. Alternatively, they don’t need to have KLS active to play 14 snaps on offense and none on special teams… but I think KLS gives the deep speed element in a different way. I could see Harris or KLS being the 7th inactive.
Alternatively, they could elevate another practice squad player besides Lovato and make that player inactive, enabling both Harris and KLS to be active.
This plan gets Fisk in.
Good response, Tau.
Agree with this interpretation.
Also agree with all of this. I think Gadsden would add a large, field stretching/seam route presence none of the other TEs bring to the room. But it’s a question of priorities, and targets, and I think Fisk would come in before Gadsden does.
I think Mickens should be activated because he’s a better option if something were to happen to Gilman/Molden in the game. There’s also no evidence that he can’t play Special Teams. I’m going to trust the staff to make the right decision here. Wiliiamson being active is unncessary.
I think Eboigbe largely played because he theoretically brought more agility and ability to contain Mahomes in the pocket. I would love Naquan to be activated (particularly given the Raiders struggles with pass protection last week). Do I predict it will happen? Leaning no, they give Eboigbe another week.
Of these options, I think the last one is most likely.
Just watched in the wee hours of the morning from Michigan, headed today into Ohio and a HoF visit on Friday. Fun pod, even better with the smiles and confidence generated by a win over the Chiefs. Yeah baby!!
Roman surprised me. I’ve busted his ass as hard as anyone, I reckon. Kudos for a well-called game, relying on Justin’s immense talent, and not turtling in the second half. I hope to continue to see well-designed game plans like this
Al….you win, mate. Luckily I wasn’t drinking a beer at 4am or I’d be wearing it and you’d owe me one….lol. Now I’m even more determined to get to Oz and go drinking with you guys.
Raiders up. Will there be post-game handshakes?
FTR. Bolts win in convincing fashion, 31-16, and move to 2-0. I’ll likely be watching from somewhere in PA and NOT on my phone as I had to do for week 1. Geno throws 2 interceptions
Side note: Bruce Arians said Daniel Jones will win league MVP. I’ll have what he’s smoking.
Thanks Terry! It fills us with joy to picture people listening to our show in different parts of the world. It’s so cool. That one was one of our more fun shows to produce. We felt in a good flow and had lots of fun with it.
This game plan was easily Greg Roman’s best as Chargers OC IMO. From the first drive right to the very last (where he stayed aggressive) everything he touched turned to gold. Some of the play designs were really nice (and modern!). And he gets to walk away knowing he thoroughly outcoached Spags. Hopefully a sign of things to come; at a minimum, a very impressive start.
I expect to see another on-field stoush between Harbaugh and Carroll before I live to see Indiana Jones wins the MVP :-p
Have a great time in Canton mate!
Ride to Canton today, HoF tomorrow! I may have to ask our techie resources here (hi
Kyle DeDiminicantanio !) if there’s a way to link a Dropbox for pics. Can’t wait to see LT and Gates!!!!
Are you good with Google Drive? I can create a shared folder for you! I dont really know my way around dropbox.
I’m not techie, brother. Building the site was smashing my head against the computer through a loooot of hours os prompting ChatGPT, and hiring out for the plug-ins and what not ๐
Yeah that should work. Thanks Kyle!
I’ll try to keep it Charger focused. lol
