Ryan’s Notes

Positives

  • Tough as nails, he was sacrificed on hospital passes but he took the licks and kept fighting forwards.
  • Good contact balance too to survive the hits and keep his eyes up.
  • Made an incredibly athletic one handed diving catch over his shoulder for a huge gain, his hands look reliable to me.
  • He runs routes with strength and balance, he plays through coverage defenders and uses his speed to generate more power to maintain momentum which results in him being able to access closed off areas of the field which is an important part of playing in the two high safety era.
  • He has nice ball tracking and can play with late hands.
  • Royals has made Boise State’s defenders miss him in multiple ways, it’s not the most dynamic skillset you’ll see in this class but it is efficient and breaks the game open especially when making safeties miss after breaking to the third level on quick throws.

Negatives

  • Despite his test speed I don’t see it show up on tape until he has already reached top gear, he lacks burst to push him past the soft press he faced.
  • Not a technical route runner, he is more speed based with a one cut preference.
  • His blocking is poor, he just hopes by running at someone that it’s enough but he really needs to learn some technique.

Ryan’s Summary

Royals is a all around type of receiver that can play either side of the numbers and provide speed and some YAC threat especially when he’s given a slant to run onto. His contact balance and toughness means he will give you an extra few yards to finish too. He can make men miss to a decent standard and he makes the most of his targets with late but reliable hands. His positive athletic profile stands true on tape however this also stands true for his average explosive movement skills as he doesn’t quite have the burst off of his feet to beat man coverage. He lacks technical details to his route running and he doesn’t seem to read zone coverage well as he runs into dead spots too often.
