Questions for consideration:

How do you feel about Belichick’s first college game resulting in his UNC team getting destroyed by TCU (48-14 as I write this)? For me, as a NC State fan (with UNC a hated rival), it is a glorious result. If Belichick had any vision about using this college season as a springboard back to the NFL, this obviously isn’t what he was expecting.

Commentary/discussion on these are welcome, but yes or no questions:
Does Zion get a second contract from the Chargers? I think no because the team will choose to move on.Does Pipkins get a third contract from the Chargers? I think no because the team will not want to pay him his market value and he will take that from another team rather than signing for a discount.Does Mack get a third contract from the Chargers? I think yes, assuming no significant injuries this season.Does Colson get a second contract from the Chargers? Right now, I have to assume no.Does Gilman get a third contract from the Chargers? I think no, because they already have James, Molden, Mickens, and possibly (if he plays another year) Jefferson. Gilman isn’t notably better than any of those others.
Do you expect positive growth (which implies some level of evolution/adjustments) from Roman this season? I do expect some scheme improvements. I don’t believe Roman ever coached a QB like Herbert before. I assume Roman used the offseason to try to determine how to better maximize his talent, especially in combination with the target upgrades.

Which of the coordinators (OC Roman, DC Minter, ST Mickens) will be back in 2026? I assume Roman and Ficken will be back but assume Minter will be a NFL head coach in 2026.

So, you were against the Belichick hiring? I don’t get all the attention he’s seeking nor why he wants to continue coaching. He could take his money and 20-somthing year old girlfriend and his legacy would be in tact. This foray is going to put his reputation at risk (and further the narrative that Brady was the driving force in the Pats success).

I expected he would be unsuccessful, so I was fine with it. It has been great watching his girlfriend embarass him and the holier than thou UNC athletic department. And that game result yesterday was, as I said, glorious.

I hate how this site seemingly randomly changes formatting. I had laid my questions out with whitespace and numbers for the yes/no questions.

Hey Al: A few questions:

  • Lots of discussion on Parsons. Now that he’s injured (https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/article/micah-parsons-reportedly-dealing-with-sprain-in-back-may-need-epidural-injection-to-play-week-1-with-packers-184238968.html), thoughts on betting the farm on a player like Parsons vs. building through the draft, then adding Vets (example: Weddle with the Ravens) vs depending on one great player to deliver a championship? Could Tony Jefferson be the Eric Weddle of 2025?
  • Lots of consternation over losing Rocket. Personally, I thought Campbell had a much better pre-season and am more upset about losing him. I was a bit disappointed in Rocket in the pre-season. Am I crazy (at least about my Rocket opinion)?
  • If we were all sitting around a patio table at a Sri Lankan bar in Melbourne having beers, what do you think Roman would say about Zion/Bozeman starting in the middle of the Chargers OL? Harbaugh? Hortiz? Do you think they’re disappointed in the way this offseason worked out?
  • Who do you think is the most over-rated team going into 2025: My answer: Broncos
  • Who’s the most under-rated team? My answer: Rams
  • Who’s going to have the worst record (and 1st pick): My answer: Saints
  • Who’s going to win the SB? Easy answer is the Eagles, but I’m going with the Lions

Looking like we’re going to be back in Melbourne for Christmas, 2026.

Are you asking if Jefferson can be a good veteran safety for the Chargers like Weddle was for Baltimore? On the one hand, Jefferson has already shown that he can be good in a limited role, but Weddle averaged 1064 defensive snaps for Baltimore in 2016-2018, which is another level compared to what Jefferson has done or likely will do for the Chargers.

Or were you really asking if he could be a veteran safety spark that could help the Chargers go on a postseason run like the Rams did with Weddle in 2021? Weddle played quite well in that postseason, but I think it was more about him stepping in off the street and preventing a dropoff after Jordan Fuller broke his ankle than really sparking that run.

I was thinking more of the vet spark that Weddle provided. You are correct in that they are both different players. No disrespect to Tony, but I think peak Weddle > peak Jefferson. It just felt like a similar situation, at least to me.

And the broader question was about roster building philosophy. This is less an issue here, but if you read other venues, comments are still skewed toward what I call Madden team building. Sign splashy vets. Make splashy trades. I don’t think this is a regime that is going to do that . My complaint about Telesco (or at least one of them) was that he did not use all the tools in the toolbox. While I’m still waiting for a trade-down in the draft, Hortiz has shown a much wider willingness to use the breadth of options to solve roster problems. Unless there’s a compelling reason, I do not expect Hortiz to make a trade like the Parson’s trade.

Al: One additional quick comment. The Packers got the Parsons contract done at the time of the trade. I guess that made some sense with the start of the season looming. It felt a little Deshawn Watson/Russell Wilson-esque. If it were me and I was making this huge investment in one player, I would have the agreement in principle, make the trade, get him in-house, then get the contract done in the weeks after the trade. Felt like they were rushing to get Parsons on the field week 1. I would have waited a bit to get him ready.

The Packers first two games are against the Lions and Commanders. I get the temptation to give your team the best opportunity to win those games. The Packers are going to pay if Parsons is nursing a soft tissue injury throughout the season.
