Coming off the back of conceding 64 points over the last two weeks , it appears that the hype around Jesse Minter’s defense has started to fade away. The tape shows a different story, Minter has called good games and it has been more of a lack of talent and depth in certain positions that has meant his unit have lost fine margin battles against two of the best offenses in the league.
By no means has it been all on the players and entering into a game against the Atlanta Falcons, Minter has a chance to show how he can overcome what seems like a bad matchup. At a high level, a betting man would look at the form of the both teams and question why the spread is set at a single point in favor of the Bolts. Atlanta just got smacked 38-6 by the Denver Broncos, the same team that the Chargers handed a 23-16 loss to a few weeks earlier. Both affairs were not close contests from the first snap to the last and on paper, it seems like a mistake from the bookmakers to have the line at a virtual coin flip.
That is not how the NFL works though, it is a week-by-week league where any team can win on any given Sunday. Just look at the pathetic 2-9 Las Vegas Raiders taking the 10-1 Kansas City Chiefs all the way to the last play before Patrick Mahomes’ deal with the devil kicked in again to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
So, why is the line in this week’s game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium so narrow especially given that the Falcons have a bottom five defense? The answer is that the failings of the Chargers’ defense over the past two weeks are exactly where the Falcons can hurt you. Zac Robinson, Atlanta’s offensive coordinator, has a system that wants to do one thing: stretch you out across to defend the whole field. This applies to both how they run the ball and how they pass the ball.
Ground Game
On the ground they run a heavy dose of zone concepts as they want to get their offensive line blocking in one direction which is something the Chargers have not dealt with well over the past two games.
The Chargers’ front has earned decent penetration on the front side of these looks with Poona Ford and Teair Tart finding ways to slice through the angled blocks but the backside is where the problems start as Otito Ogbonnia, Scott Matlock and Justin Eboigbe have struggled with how to pursue the runners whilst still maintaining their gap integrity. On this example against the Ravens on Monday night Matlock failed to read the line shift and it cost him the chance to penetrate the backfield or cut off the backside lane so Henry couldn’t press inside.
This play illustrates why linebackers matter despite what the media groupthink has been trying to pedal in recent years. Derwin forces the fullback block which means that Henley has to hit the outside shoulder of the tight end as he has a backside fill coming his way in Niemann. Instead he tries to shoot the gap which would have been fine if the tight end didn’t have a free release due to Derwin forcing the issue from a wide alignment. Which player was wrong here I can’t say as I don’t know the exact run fit principles but needless to say if the front is not in cohesion, this stuff will happen again.
Injuries have forced Jesse Minter into playing Troy Dye and Nick Niemann in base looks as Denzel Perryman is out again to add to Junior Colson being on IR and even the only remaining starter, Daiyan Henley, is carrying an injury which could limit his snaps. Together these absences and limitations have put the Bolts in spots they don’t want to be in against a Falcons’ interior line group which has become the lifeblood of their offense.
“The Falcons were on a bye this week, butย Chris Lindstromย retained his lead atop the run-blocking grades for guards. His 93.4 is made up of 90.0-plus grades in zone and man blocking.” – PFF
Chris Lindstrom, their All-pro right guard, is playing at an elite level but the two lesser known names of Drew Dalman and Matthew Bergeron have flashed as young players to watch in the future as they grow into their scheme. All of this meshes will with who they have in the backfield with Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier being put in a position to expose the creases their line create for them in very different ways. In the example below you can see Bijan path to the second level by some great reach block from the center and a solid climb from the left guard. To give a back that talented , that much space is a killer.
After this play the Broncos containedย Robinsonย in check for 13 carries and only 44 yards, they adjusted quickly to have their outside linebackers play hard off the edge and they had Zach Allen causing chaos on the backside every single play. Both these moves allowed their off ball front players like Justin Strnad and Cody Barton to fire through gaps early. Jesse Minter’s defense is likely not going to be able to do the same thing as the linebackers haven’t shown they can do this and if they play overly aggressive, the other part of the Falcons’ attack will come into effect.
Pass attack
Atlanta’s running concepts are to stretch you out sideline to sideline and this pairs well with how they want to pass the ball. The Falcons lead the league in 11 personnel usage with 88.8% which is effective enough with Kirk Cousins’ ability to dissect zone coverages in a hurry. I have been surprised with their lack of play action given Kirk’s vast experience on these concepts however when you turn on the tape you can see where Zac Robinson has been going instead.
The Falcons have not utilized play action very often when compared to other units across the league. According to TruMedia, Atlanta ranks last in the league with play-action passes amounting to 8% of its total plays. – From the Falcons’ website
He has utilized quick passes to his running backs at a high rate, they motion the back across the formation as if they’re going to run but as the ball is never faked to them so it doesn’t count as a play action snap. This gives the offense an advantage because the line still has to respect the back and it gives the back a speedy release into the flats which works very effectively against teams that play two high shells because the defense has to defend all 53 yards across the field.
Cousins’ time to throw is very quick so pressure won’t solve these problems either, it will be about who is left in the shallow spaces to make plays when left with taking down the Falcons’ talented offensive weapons.
Injuries will mean that Minter’s defense may struggle to fill these concepts as Cam Hart, who is brilliant at open field tackles, is out again and Tarheeb Still, for all his positives, has not been a consistent tackler when out in space. Ja’sir Taylor is even weaker in contact situations so Minter should do whatever it takes to avoid him being left with the running backs. Another factor to consider is that Alohi Gillman will not be on the field. He not only directs traffic in the secondary but he also reads shallow passes earlier than everyone else, his absence will be felt just as much as Perryman’s.
Minter will therefore have to find a way to get his defense to read these looks in an efficient and accurate manner because with three key players missing in the areas of the field, Bijan and the underrated Allgeier can cause some problems with the ball in their hands.
The last of my observations is that the Chargers’ linebacker grouping of Daiyan, Dye and Derwin showed their lack of time together. The play above is 2-man and traditionally linebackers are taught not to chase crossing routes over the midfield line as they are protecting the hashes. This means that as Mark Andrews crosses over Henley’s face, Daiyan is meant to communicate that with a call like โinโ but both Troy and James had already stepped upfield to deal with the scrambling threat from Lamar. This means that neither of them followed the big tight end and it led to a big play at a key moment of the game. I really like how Derwin is shaping up as the Will linebacker in Nickel and Dime looks but he needs to be more in tune with the details of linebacker play like this as this mistake is on him.
Overall whilst this Falcons’ offense is not on the levels of the Bengals or Ravens that have both surpassed 30 points on Minter’s unit but they do provide matchup problems for the Bolts this week. I’m really hoping to see some adjustments and coverage switchups to protect the flats in the pass game and I expect to see some alignment alternatives from the front to counteract the threat of a backside cut.

Finally, Derwin exploded in a game in a way that leaped off the screen:

More like it please, DJ!
I was at the game (with my friends sideline box seats). Sat 10-15 feet behind the Chargers bench. A few observations:
Defense:
Offense:
I’ve been willing to give Greg Roman the benefit of the doubt. We can make personnel excuses and there actually may be some merit to that argument. However, the defense is playing at a championship level with arguably a worse roster. There is no reason why an offense with a top-5 QB should be this bad. The coaching sucks and it needs to be fixed.
This is fantastic insight dude thank you for taking the time to share it with the community! i’m curious who was complaining about Herbert not running? Was it the players?
There was plenty of that talk at BT when I lurked the GDT post game. Typical of that site.
I thought Herbert looked a bit shaky but no one but McConkey was open. Combine that with inside pressure and containment? Hard to get much going.
I’ve been pretty rough on Roman and see no reason to back off. He’s not adjusting to the roster he has.
Yeah, the Herbert not running takes were irksome because the Falcons clearly were doing a good job of not letting him get outside the Tackles to setup those deep throws or scrambles.
Those complaints then turn into Herbert had a terrible game, ignorant of everything else and unable to focus on the win or the defensive play.
I hope this community grows but not at that expense.
Ryan- I heard this on a couple post-game podcasts. To me, it looked like he was trying to run, but the Falcons DL did a good job of compressing the pocket. The word is out now on how to stop the Charger offense. Bracket Lad, contain Herbert in the pocket. Let’s see of Roman has a counter.
For a guy that is no nonsense about things, you would think Harbaugh would be up Roman’s ass for this offensive performance, especially in the second halves. If he is, and this is what we are getting, he can’t be long for this role. If the excuse is, he doesn’t have the personnel, bullshit. They believed this was enough during the draft and FA period You coach and design the offense with what you have. Get QJ some mesh routes and screens, get Davis on a gadget play deep, use Vidal in the passing game. You just can’t sit there and throw your hands up because you don’t have Chase and Jefferson on the team. And where is this vaunted rushing attack? You can’t pin the lack of it on the interior OL or the RB room. This was the OL and RB’s they envisioned in the offseason and they are all healthy except for Dobbins, but it wasn’t much better with him in there. This offense is a rudderless ship. There is literally nothing it does well except give up sacks.
Bingo. No identity, no productive adjustments, no scheming to highlight what you have.
I agree with you about the scheme but I suggest a little realism on the roster. They went into the season that way because they could only clean up some of the mess in one offseason with the disastrous roster and over the cap salaries they inherited. Hard choices had to be made. They are building something but it takes time. This is not a Super Bowl team. I donโt think they moved prior to the trade deadline because they know that and did not want to overpay. They have a plan. It may frustrate us because the D is playing so well it feels like a wasted opportunity but I donโt think it is. They will make the playoffs, could win a playoff game depending on health and opponent. That would be a huge win given where they started 9 months ago.
This wasn’t complementary ball. This was the defense with an assist from ST (I’m not putting that bone headed fake punt call on them). The offense, quite frankly, sucked except for McConkey.

Late to the party. Had to watch the second half delayed. I canโt believe they won that game. Just an incredible defensive performance down the stretch. Love how they closed that out when the offense is in complete disarray.
Take out the garbage TD at the end of the Ravens game that is one TD on 7 quarters. No one but McConkey who is playing hurt can get open. They need to try something different. I was not down on QJ after the Ravens game. He has improved from last year and anyone can have a bad game but man when you look over the past three games he has been terrible. They need to sit him for awhile and let him get his head back. There is no confidence there and he is hurting the team with his inability to make a play. Reagor who I liked early just adds nothing to the offense. And Palmer is just a guy who canโt beat single coverage. Herbert had time today over and over again. Half those sacks on him if not more were coverage sacks. I am not sure why Roman is not trying to run more after first down. They have just become predictable and totally ineffective. They are not beating the Chiefs or Broncos with this offense.
There’s a guy with legit speed who should get more touches. His initials are DD. Maybe he won’t light the stat sheets on fire but right now defenses aren’t showing much if any respect for deep balls. Past time to spread them out with at least the threat. An occasional jet sweep isn’t doing that.
A relevant question is, can he get open deep? I don’t know the answer, but we do know he has not been targeted deep.
They have certainly set him up to fake something short and try to go deep, given his average ADOT on the season of 1.1.
As you said, won’t know for certain until it’s attempted. And there should be other ways to get the ball into his hands and utilize that speed. Same for QJ, though I recognize he’s earned his way onto most everyone’s shit list now, including mine.
I was at the game – QJ did not look like he belonged on the field. He was missing blocks (one of which led to a screen being blown up behind the LOS – it was one of the worst efforts at blocking I’ve seen).
Can’t catch, can’t run routes, can’t block. The dude can’t play WR right now.
He looked lacking in confidence on the TV. I really think they should sit him for a game and let him get a chance to get it together. I am not sure continuing to play him is helping. May be making it worse. I know it is a different position but sitting Bryce Young for a bit after he looked totally lost when the Chargers played them has done wonders for his confidence.
Without seeing the snap count, I did notice that Davis was in on far more snaps than I expected. It looked like they were setting something up with him. I actually saw him run routs (looked like he was just running a go).
But agree that the Chargers need to figure out how to get the ball into their playmakers hands in space. Good coaching would figure that out.
Screen passes and short crossers to him ought to work. I agree. Even if he is not a good deep ball option.
A good OC can use scheme to get guys open. Not every play requires a sick route or incredible speed to get open. Go watch a KC, Rams or Vikings game. There are plays where there is nobody within 5 yards of the receiver. Have we seen that once this year except on a busted coverage? The 2nd half offense has been hot garbage all season. You are playing a mediocre team with a bad defense and you can’t score an offensive TD with Herbert? Fine, you say that Roman’s strength is the rushing attack. Where is it? This is the offense they planned on executing with these players. Edwards was initially signed to be the starter until they took a flyer on Dobbins late in FA, and this is the starting OL they envisioned also, so you cannot say this offense is being executed differently due to injuries. It’s shit. I know Harbaugh believes skill positions are secondary building blocks, but it’s criminal to give Herbert this chicken shit and ask for chicken salad every week. The 5 sacks given up weren’t guys just getting whipped off the snap. Herbert was dropping back and looking to throw, but nobody was open. Why does an offense with “limited” weapons continue to refuse to use any sort of screen game? Isn’t the athleticism of Alt and Slater supposed to be a strength? If this team replaced Lombardi with a better overall offense, there’s no reason we have to watch Roman again next year. There’s a reason he was in the street looking for work. If the Ravens fire your ass, and your replacement has them on a historic offensive pace with pretty much the same players, that’s all you need to know.
I agree with this. My only additional comment is that the defensive coaches are making chicken salad out of the chicken shit roster they were handed. They’re taking late round draft picks and waiver wire signings and turning them into a top-5 NFL defense.
The offensive staff is taking one of the best QB talents, two all-pro level tackles and a WR group that includes 2 1st round picks (Reagor, QJ), 2 2nd round picks (Chark, McConkey), a formerly reliable 3rd round pick (Palmer) and an all-pro returner and turning them into one of the least productive WR groups in the NFL. That is shite coaching.
Letโs be real. QJ and Reagor are busts as first round picks. Chark hasnโt seen the field and Palmer is just ok. The IOL is makeshift with a cellar dweller Panthers castoff center and a mediocre to bad tackle converted to a position heโs never played in his life and it shows. The coaching can be better but letโs not pretend this offense is talent-wise what it was with Allen and a healthy Williams. These are the struggles of a rebuild where you have an entirely different philosophy offensively than your predecessors and cannot convert the talent to meet the system in one offseason. This is going to take time. They still need the following to truly run this offense: RG, C, WR1, TE1 and TE2, and one young dynamic RB who is not injury prone. One to two more years and this team will hum offensively. We want to win now. Harbaugh and co. are building for a sustained Super Bowl run over the next few years.
To compare the O to the D is unfair in part because O is harder to fix and also because what Minter is doing may be unprecedented in NFL history when considering the talent level and injuries he has had to overcome. I am not sure it is unprecedented but I can safely say I have never seen it done before from essentially worst to first in one season. Incredible!
Lots of good points here. It is interesting to see the flip from running too much in the second half to not enough. There was one sequence in the second half where Gus ran for 9 or 10 yards and then tapped out. I donโt think he got another rushing attempt the rest of the second half. Something fishy there or he is playing hurt. Not sure why they stopped running in the second half as both Gus and Vidal has some decent runs. Once they become one dimensional they become easy to shut down.
I do think the O played well for the few games leading up to and thru the first half of the Bengals game. The stagnation coincides with QJ losing confidence and dropping balls and a bit later the loss of JK. I also think the second half shift by the Bengals to more man coverage exposed a glaring weakness on the team and both the Ravens and Falcons copied what work. And yes Roman needs to counter it.
I think they need to commit to the run earlier and stick with it as long as the game is close, especially in the second half. The 3 passes in a row with this WR talent is a losing strategy.
I remember the first half of the Chiefs game the Chargers O showed some creativity. I expect it again this coming Sunday night at least to start the game. Letโs see if they can sustain it for four quarters. There is always a first time ๐ I am going to that game. Would be great to see them finally beat the Chiefs in person. ๐ค
Damn….wild ending to the Indy/NE game.
Yeah that FG was darn close
Game balls to all of you here. Thanks for always making games better. Off to work now (grumble, grumble). Catch up with you this week.
Good hanging with ya man. Have a good week.
Jefferson and Maye coming up huge. Hortiz wasnโt kidding when he talked about upgrading the bottom of the roster.
So are we gonna start seeing Chark or are the coaches still fine with this group?
Hey, eight wins with this group. Why change?
[sarcasm font]
We need the sarcasm font plug-in, Kyle.
๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
But why? If he’s healthy, wtf….start using him.
Oh wait….is it his blocking? ๐
I think they must be stuck thinking that Chark is a better option than whoever they could poach off a Practice Squad.
Cutting QJ doesn’t seem like an option with the Cap Hit we’d take so it starts to become Chark or Reagor who would need to be Cut to add another WR.
You take the W. But this offense sucks. Canโt expect to win regularly with no offensive TD
Definitely was NOT complementary football today.
And thatโs how you win ugly. Great game by the D.
They count all the same! Nice to be on the right end of one of these
Seems like a game Iโve seen a thousand times before, but this time, Bolts win. Iโll take it.
Holy crap….4 interceptions and still only 4 point loss.
That was one of the best games I’ve seen DJ play in quite some time
Game balls for him and Still for sure.
Derwin for the WIN!!!!
Love to see it! Would be nice to see him getting back to his pro bowl self over he final stretch of the season
Fuck yeah!
DERWIN BITCHES!!!!!
LET’S FUCKING GO!!!!!
Oh good to see them burning the TO there
Ah it was the Chargers that took the TO
4th and 12…..my butthole is puckered.
Glad Iโm not alone.
Wow. Maye wants to win this game.
Still having himself a game
Huh….boy, that was too close.
Still is the MAN
Damn they Already got a lot of that yardage back
Is it 2nd down coming up?
2nd & 21
Boom!!! Coming up with that fumble would sealed it.
They would have called it an incomplete pass
One more time, D. Letโs go!
This would be such a brutal loss
There was no hold on that play. Phantom call.
Sure looked like they were both holding each other
The universal “holding” call that could be made on any play. Usually isn’t in a situation like that.
Taylor should just be cut
Fucking hell. Now this absolutely feels like the Cardinals all over again
Sonuvabitch….
4th down for the game. Can we hold once more?
Fourth down stop. Get it! Get it!
If we want to win this game we need one more stop. Defense will have to do it all themselves
The way the offense comes out of halftime just completely flaccid, you have to wonder what exactly they’re doing in the locker room…
Defense steps up again.
Offense????
Last drive of the game, it looks like. D needs to hold.
3 picks, including a pick 6 and they are still very much in this game. That just fucking sucks
Falcons entering the game: 10 sacks
Falcons today: 5 sacks
Yikes
Yeah, that’s bad.
Thank goodness for 3 interceptions, one for 6.
Yeah, worst in the NFL. And we can’t hold them off. Sheesh.
I could be wrong, but it looks to be as much on the receivers as it is the offensive line.
Herberts looking downfield but can’t find anyone, and keeps trying to tuck it and run. The defensive line has been doing a good job of staying disciplined and not over pursuing, and has bounced whenever he’s tried to climb through the pocket and take off.
Good observation
I see the same. Herbert hasnโt been drilled for big losses, but the sacks are coming after four seconds when the pocket finally collapses.
There’s no separation from anyone not named McConkey.
This offense is rough
Rough would be an improvement today.
189 total yards so far. Thankful that Cousins likes to throw INTs.
JFC……
Gotta be impressed with the defensive effort this game.
Absolutely. Love to see the defense confirming all the good stuff they were doing up until the Bengals 2nd half
Now get a couple of daggum first downs!
There’s one. ๐
OK deep ball to Chark.
lol
Whatever happens from here, that defensive stand was aces.
Well dayum….nice defense!
Marcus Maye!!!!!!!
Cousins bum. D bailing out the offense yet again. Please return the favor now
Pfffftttttt
