Ryan’s Notes
Positives
- The best of Travisโ work at corner is seen when in man coverage, his press technique is clean and he has smooth transition mechanics that means he can put himself into the most appropriate positions based on his matchups.
- He has a variable bag of man coverage techniques which he deploys depending on the context of alignment, leverage and field position. This is a trait you usually see in more seasoned corners.
- This flexibility extends to coverages too where Hunter is adept in the slot, off-man, press-man, trap or deep zone.
- Hunter possesses good zone instincts and quick processing which allowed him to play the trap role in the Tampa 2 coverage that Colorado often used. He used his understanding of route tempo and speed to bait quarterbacks into mistakes from this position too.
- He feels routes very smartly too with a natural understanding of when to lean, when to close and when to turn. This has certainly come from his experience on offense.
- His explosive speed translates to all parts of his game and his rapid reaction time means he is rarely ever out of position but when he is, he can recover very quickly.
- Hunterโs plus athleticism means he is able to get in and out of his breaks at speed
- His communication skills are clear to see on tape too, he is calling out the adjustments for his teammates and they often result in positive plays.
- Travis can also find the ball very well at the catch point and through contact, his overall ball skills are very good
Negatives
- Travis often finds ways to be โblockedโ when he could have easily avoided it and his effort against any kind of physicality is poor. He actively turns away from the run game at times and he has a real lack of awareness when it comes to fulfilling his responsibilities such as giving up the sideline.
- As is often the case with experienced man-corners Travis plays right up to the line of what he can get away with in tight coverage. His tendency to hold through difficult transitions may not always have been flagged but they will be noticed more at the next level so heโll need to learn when he canโt get away with it.
- At 185 lbs he is a bit light and finds trouble when dealing with screen blocks
- He was exposed for his size in the endzone a few times
Ryan’s Summary
Travis Hunter, the most unique draft prospect in a lifetime, played two positions at an elite level on his way to winning the Heisman trophy yet his tape at cornerback would be outstanding on its own. His experience as a wide receiver feeds into his cornerback play and when combined with his elite movement skills, this makes him an asset to any defensive coordinator that wants to close off one side of the field. He is not without his faults and although they are minor, heโs got work to do before he will be an elite corner in the NFL.
