Hey StormCloud! Ryan and I got together for another pod, going over which receivers the Chargers should target in free agency. Instead of a full written post, Ryan has an incredible slideshow below with clips, scouting notes, and alternative options to his top picks.

Let us know what you guys think in the comments below!

Solid episode. I’m glad your conclusion is to go get Higgins, which has been my stance for a while now.

Kyle mentioned that his stats would suggest he is worth $22M/year and said he would get an uptick because teams would recognize that he would get an increase in targets/production if not paired with Chase. But his market value won’t be just established by stats… it will be the combination of a few things:

  • His particular skills that Ryan highlighted and are readily apparent on film, and how those will impact whatever team signs him.
  • He is 26 years old, so there shouldn’t be any reason for concern about an age-based dropoff for the duration of his contract… which suggests that his new team won’t have to worry about WR1 for at least 3-4 seasons.
  • The fact that he will arguably be the best WR to hit unrestricted free agency… ever.

I know you guys know this, it just seemed like a statement that was out of place with the rest of the Higgins conversation.

Look forward to more of these.

Forgot to say that I was surprised there was no mention of Garrett Wilson as a possible trade target. I saw a bunch of possible trade targets on the slides with not all being discussed: Metcalf, Kupp, Hill, Pickens, Deebo, Adams, et al. But I didn’t see Wilson mentioned despite the rumors that he will be traded.

Is that because you don’t like him as a trade candidate, whether due to fit, draft capital cost, contract extension cost, or some combination of those?

You’re right I should have covered him to some extent. The reason I didn’t mention him by name is that he fit into the category of Z/Y receivers that are best as possession guys but I unlike Kupp he doesn’t have the physical benefit when lined up tight. So whilst he would be a great weapon (as he is a great receiver) he would be underutilized for his trade capital. I think he’d be a straight replacement for QJ but the team should be looking for players who can either be a consistent down field threat or those who play multiple roles.

I think it’s more about how you construct the WR room as a whole rather than identifying talented receivers and seeing how you can get them onto the field at the same time.

@ryanwatkins Now that Rodgers is gone, Wilson will not be asking out. His gripe was returning with Rodgers and Adams glazing each other.

Another solid pod fellas. I am not sold on Kupp. I think like Ryan said, he has a ton of miles on him and we would be trading for a declining asset. My preference would be Tee, DK, Kupp, in that order if we had to choose from the 3, but I would be out on Kupp with everything being equal. Tee makes the most sense b/c it is just $ and no draft capital to acquire him. I still think TE will not come in Rd1 so unless they have a day 2 target in mind, I wouldn’t mind signing Gesicki for a 2 yr deal. He at least gives us a pass catching upgrade and will give us insurance if we aren’t able to select one in the draft.

@evolz3737 I have seen you post this about Gesicki several times, but there is arguably a better option. The Guilty As Charged podcast guys said Juwan Johnson should be the preferred veteran TE if they want to sign a free agent for TE1. Gesicki was their second choice.

Johnson’s metrics are strong, he is a year younger than Gesicki, and he played with Herbert at Oregon. I would be good with signing him and removing TE as a potential 1st/2nd round pick.

@tau837 Interesting. Johnson is one of those guys that got hype year after year in Saints training camp (I think I drafted him as a backup TE in fantasy at least twice), but he just never really broke out. I’d be on board though, theoretically he should be more athletic and more of a red zone threat than Dissly even though he’s never put up a great statistical season. I do question why his catch %, YAC and ADOT numbers are even worse than Dissly’s. I’d optimistally close my eyes and chalk it up to just QB play and system.

@blue-beers I haven’t taken the time to look it up, but the GAC guys were talking about his YPRR, YAC, success rate, etc. as if they were near top of league numbers for TEs. IMO volume definitely is not the way to judge him (or, really, any player) without context.

@tau837 His YPRR is solid, but YAC, success rate, catch % is not that great. No way its near top of the league.

@blue-beers I would have to go back and listen again, since I must have misstated what they were saying.

@tau837 I never really considered him because I never thought he was anything special when I have seen him play. I am a football junkie and watch all day every Sunday and Monday and usually catch most of the Thursday night game, so I have definitely seen a bunch of Saints games. Add in the fact that I had Kamara on my fantasy team the last 2 years, and I tuned in a little more than just casually. He’s not terrible, but I have not watched him and thought “wow I would love this guy on the Chargers”. I tend to be more about what they look like on the field than the #’s behind it. You could also argue his level of QB play has been spotty at best, and I could agree that could have an effect. I wouldn’t mind bringing him in as insurance in case we don’t land a TE early in the draft, but I wouldn’t be counting on him either to be the pass catching weapon we need to open up the offense.

Same here, @evolz3737. Maybe that’s why we often agree.

Thanks for the podcast, Kyle and Ryan. Haven’t had the opportunity to watch yet but maybe today after more packing….ugh.

A little about Tee Higgins’ wishes. He can certainly keep playing with an elite QB as a Charger. I’m not entirely sold that he leaves Cincy.

@buck-melanoma Good Luck with the packing Buck. I know what a pain that can be. Hopefully we can keep up the good off season dialogue here to give you a reason to take breaks.

Looks/sounds like Tee Higgins will get the tag again.

Are we now on the Davante Adams bus?

@buck-melanoma I would sign him. He’s getting older, but I think he’d fit well in our offense for a couple of years.

I agree. And he seems pretty motivated to be a Charger.

I would rather have Higgins but could support Adams as long as his price is okay.
