Concerned about player safety my ass. It’s all about the almighty dollar.

The NFL will never sign up for this method IMO. They certainly will never mandate forced benching of QB1 for QB2 for at least 2 full games per season.

But that probably extends to OL as well… the state of OL play in the NFL is not good, and this proposal says Slater and Alt and others of their caliber are forced to sit for 2 games apiece?

This is not what fans want to see or spend their money on.

I think they will inevitably go to 18 regular season games played over 20 weeks, with 2 byes per team. One bye will occur somewhere in the first half of the 20 week season (e.g., weeks 5-10) and one will occur in the second half (e.g., 11-16). Some number of the games will obviously be international, and others could be neutral site games to give fans in cities not close to NFL teams a chance to see games live and in person. The extra bye will allow them to follow byes with Thursday night games and lead into or follow byes with international games, to relieve some of the current schedule stress.

When they do this, my guess is they will expand the regular season roster and the active gameday roster by +2 each. They could expand the practice squad roster also, but I doubt it, it has already been expanded quite a bit recently.

@tau837 which goes directly to the point I made….player safety is a farce. The 17 game schedule already takes enough physical toll and another bye week does little to alleviate that.

I don’t think they’d adopt this idea either but again, that wasn’t really my point.

@buck-melanoma I understand and agree with your point. But my point is, it is inevitable, whether we agree with it or not. Shrug.

@tau837 I suppose, unfortunately, you’re right. For far too many money overrides all.

Deano all up in the middle of the collusion talk. Dunno how this ultimately shakes out but you can bet Harris’s agent is gonna keep this little gem close at hand for reference during negotiations.

IMO Harris is being shortsighted and is getting bad advice from his agent. He should be focused on doing everything he can to outplay his rookie contract, in which case he will get paid all money on his contract, meaning the amount guaranteed is irrelevant. Missing practices does not help him toward that objective. SMH.

@tau837 it’s not just about Harris. Agents and the NFLPA are trying to shift the norm on second round contracts. I’m not saying I agree with their intent nor am I disagreeing that Harris is taking helpful advice for his overall career, but this is much bigger than him.

And it does appear that Dean stepped in a very sticky area that may be considered collusion. As is often said, this is a business. That doesn’t only apply when it’s to the owner’s benefit.

I get the bigger picture. But Harris was the 55th pick… the 23rd pick of the 3rd round. He’s not going to get a fully guaranteed contract, and he is just wasting time and opportunity. If this is on advice of his agent, IMO it is bad advice.

As for the collusion situation, I listed to the Pablo Torre podcast with Mike Florio about the supposed collusion case. I’m not a legal expert, but what I heard sounds like bad optics but IMO likely does not rise to a legal conclusion of collusion if this were to be litigated. As for Dean’s text, it’s a nothingburger IMO. Herbert’s contract was in line with the current QB market at the time.

@tau837 23rd pick of the 2nd round.

I get what you’re saying, and what kev is saying below. I think it sets a bad precedent to guarantee the entire contract, certainly not before some new agreement is adopted in the CBA.

BUT…..what happens if he goes out and suffers a career-ending injury early in his career? Does this look like such bad advice then?

Maybe I’m just different. I usually lean towards siding with workers, unions, and worker/player safety. I see a lotta lip service about these things in the league, much less that actually addresses the shortfalls. The league is continuing to ink big money deals and the owners are continuing to dupe taxpayers into paying big money toward new stadiums. I’m for spreading that wealth.

Call me Comrade Buck if you’d like. 😆

McConkey signed a 4 year, $9.995M contract last season, with $9.186M guaranteed. That was as the 34th pick, but a year ago.

So, without looking it up, Harris is in line to sign a contract worth several million dollars, most of which would be guaranteed. What is the worst case scenario, that he signs it and then suffers a career ending injury? He would still have probably $6M to $7M guaranteed, less taxes and his agent fees. So maybe $3M to $4M guaranteed? This is the worst case scenario for a person who is, what, 23 years old? Cry me a fucking river.

IMO that worst case scenario is not worth driving behavior. What is worth driving behavior is the idea that a play want to maximize his play from day one, thus eventually maximizing his earning potential.

It is also worth noting, this is not a typical union situation. The players will be paid a collective fixed amount (including benefits). If one player gets more, one or more other players get less.

@tau837 your “cry me a fucking river” comment is pretty callous, IMO, when we all see the amount of money thrown around in this league. That attitude goes a long way towards me siding with the players on many issues.

@buck-melanoma I’m perfectly fine agreeing to disagree with you about it.

@tau837 This is absolutely correct.  The work put in right now will pay dividends in the regular season.  Missing camp as a rookie WR can’t be made up later in the year.  The longer this lasts, the less impact Harris will have during the season.

I get the business side of things and the “greater good” argument, but when that goes against your interests, you need to do what’s right for you.

And now, Mike Williams retires.

Step one: sign Harris

Step two: might as well call Keenan’s agent

Step three: get Rice more reps

Step four: hope that running game emerges

Step five: pull out all remaining hair

Step six: tell fans and media the everything is ok

@smith this issue is not likely to just go away. Glad Harris signed, still interested in contract details but haven’t taken time to dig around. Too much fun to be had out here on the road.

@buck-melanoma Man, I am equal parts happy for you and envious of your trip. Glad you’re still taking the time to post here. Should you find yourself around San Luis Obispo, let me know, though I think you may have busted out of CA by now.

@smith thx bro. Yeah, I’m up on the Olympic Peninsula in Port Angeles now. Tomorrow I head over to Seattle for a week with friends and family, then up to Vancouver, Banff, and Calgary.

I’ll post some pics if someone can coach my illiterate ass on how to do it here….lol

@buck-melanoma Awesome sight man. You are having the trip of a lifetime. Soak up every minute and it will only continue over seas. Should be interesting tuning in for the Chargers games at like 9-10PM in Europe.
