Goooooood morning, afternoon, and evening Chargers fans!
We have a preseason matchup against the in-town Los Angeles Rams today, but more importantly, we have our first opportunity to test out the functionality of a live-running “Open Thread” on this site for the first time.
I’ll apologize now: I’ll likely be out of pocket for the duration of the game. I’m proudly entering the 16th year of a father/son fantasy football league, with an incredible group of family friends. I’m going to be elbow-deep in a 12-team auction draft tomorrow with libations flowing, but I’ll still try to check in and say hi.
That said, I’d love for us to give the capabilities of our website a little test with an Open Thread. It’s a great opportunity for a stress-test before the regular season.
As a reminder, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND using the ARTICLE page, NOT the forum page, for the open thread. The Article page has been tweaked to update automatically, highlight new/unread posts yellow, and has a little chat bubble that displays live-updates. Please give that page a run-through during the game (or throughout the day), and we’ll chat about what went right and wrong later.
I’ll do my very best to listen to feedback and make some correction so we’re better prepared for the season.

Good morning fellow Chargers fans,
I didn’t watch the game yesterday (watching the Padres try to take the NL West from the Dodgers) but read some posts from BFTB and they were a bit concerning.ย Is this all premature since it’s preseason or should we be alarmed at the lack of scoring from our offense?ย I’m reading a lot of doomsaying from comments.ย I believe in Harbaugh and the coaching staff, it’s just going to take some time for things to gel.ย BTW, got McConkey and Bowers on a couple of fantasy teams as bench players.ย Thinking they’ll make a difference later in the year when injuries start to pile up.ย Go Chargers!ย
ย
BFTB is full of hyperbolic doomsayers. When you have posters already saying Alt is a bust, how seriously can you take that community?
ย
I’d manage expectations but I hardly think the sky is falling either.
I don’t want this to seem hateful but Stick stinks.ย
Tannehill is the answer…
I think I’ve seen you write elsewhere that you’d seek to sign Tannehill to a longer-term back-up contract, so he’s QB2 at least for ’24 & ’25 (his age 36 and 37 seasons).
I can see the attraction of that. But I can also see why, at a cheaper cost, they might look to raid another team’s QB3 post-cut day. and then look to the 2025 Draft if they need to.ย
Right now, I think they’re confident that Herbert will start Wk 1. I wonder what impact that would have, if any, on their decision-making. If Herbert was in doubt, for me, that would make the Tannehill signing more attractive.
I think it would be worth it to sign him for something like $4M in 2024, $6M in 2025, $9M in 2026, with 2024-2025 guaranteed and an easy out for the team before 2026. That could mean parting ways after 2025 or reworking 2026 into another 2-3 year deal if both parties are happy with continuing.
The team would get a veteran who can win games in Herbert’s absence if needed… something they don’t currently have. Also an athletic QB who would likely be a good fit for Roman’s offense. Also an older mentor for Herbert in the QB room, which he had in Chase Daniel but no longer has.
Would Tannehill refuse to sign for that? It would be a final team to carry him into retirement. He would also be signing for all of the positive things the Chargers now have to offer: Harbaugh, Hortiz, LA, the Bolt, and team on the rise to contender status during his final seasons. I doubt any other teams are offering him something more attractive.
Something else to add. Waiting until final roster cuts means not signing the QB2 until August 28 at the earliest. Signing Tannehill today means getting 10 days pf preseason time with him that the team won’t have with a roster cut signing. At this point, 10 days may not seem like a lot, but it’s not nothing.
All in all I’m encouraged. Just going to take some time ridding this team of the Telesco holdovers. Namely Sarrell and Stick. Everyone else for the most part at least seems to be learning something new. It is concerning that our TE’s have been a non factor in the passing game thus far but, I think if we had better backup QB talent to start the offseason we’d have a better idea. Hortiz and Harbaugh still have adjustments and process refining to do which I’ve seen them display the ability and willingness to. Go Bolts into week 3.ย
My guess is Jim said Easton gets the half and it might be his last in a Chargers uniform. 5 years in a professional organization and he fumbles a snap on the run and overthrows 2 wide open receivers, one of which was a guaranteed tuddy.
If we think we’re mad, I’m pretty sure that former NFL QB Jim Harbaugh who wishes he could still suit up and play HATES seeing Stick make these avoidable mistakes at the cost of his team mates. Stick is gone and can’t possible maintain the respect of his teammates when he keeps costing them money essentially if they can’t make the team because of his bum ass.
I don’t disagree at all! I hope they keep churning through the backup options.
Heinicke is my choice personally to come compete for QB2. I’d put him in Sticks spot right now and let the rest work itself out. My main concern is the lack of faith he’s probably garnered in his teammates. How can they possibly trust a guy with a clean pocket that plays like a scared high schooler. Someone has to play with command and poise if Herbert can’t suit up and it isn’t Stick as far as I’m concerned. I tried hypothesizing why Harbaugh would keep a liability around as QB 2 and the only answer I can think of is the amount of knowledge Stick has about the new offense. If Stick is cut before week 1, there is almost no chance Telesco doesn’t pick him up just for intel on the new scheme. Possible Stick isn’t supplanted until after week 1.
The main thing is they have to do something to be better there. Stick isn’t him and Buck was being nice yesterday saying he stinks, but he’s much worse than stinks.
Deane Leonardโs a guy whoโs continually shown little signs and improvement since the moment he arrived at the facility. Happy to see him having a great game today. This Minter Defense looks really good.
He’s such a weird dude. He’s been a training camp stud since his rookie year… ALWAYS flashes. Did some things right last year, but also had some bonehead plays.
Could definitely be a case of it “clicking” and suddenly the dude takes off.
A quick question.
Is it possible to get this change to the forum page too? Only if the majority agrees, of course.ย

It’s a request I’ve sent to the dev’s, but the formatting between forums and blog commenting is completely different, so the capabilities aren’t easy to replicate. They’ve been less communicative than they were initially (probably too much harassment from me ๏ปฟ๐ ๏ปฟ), but my hope is to keep test driving this thing and come at them with enough new work that they’ll prioritize us a little more given the increased budget. Hopefully at that point we’ll be adding some stuff while also backfilling and correcting some wonky things.
But yeah – I’d like the forums to operate similarly, but I also hope to format the main page so every does use that primarily like when we were at BFTB, and the forum becomes an awesome extra add-on and revamped version of the FanPosts section.
While I don’t deserve the honor, I’m happy to be the first to pst to this thread. I’m a lifetime Chargers fan born and raised in NJ and now living in TN. Very excited about this season and our beloved franchise’s future prospects as a dominant force. LFG!
Let’s go!!!! Thanks for joining the site and chatting alongside us!!
welcome and keep posting, TN Bolt man..
