Ryan’s Notes

  • Cal: Blocking is pretty solid, he establishes square and solid contact and whilst his lateral strength isn’t great the base technique is a good place to build from.
  • He is a better blocker out in space than he is in-line, he really clamps down on smaller players and uses his feet well combined with his outside shoulder firm grip to control the defender away from the lane.
  • Solid hands, he’s made two very clean catches at the top of his reach without extending too far, nice ball protection and he never looked like dropping them.
  • Syracuse tried to feed him the ball as often as they could which is a good sign (McCord is looking nice) and for good reason as he moves with good speed as well as getting in and out of his breaks quickly even if he does play a bit tall.
  • He showed some really nice body control to keep the toes down on his sideline grab even when catching at the top of his reach.
  • I think his frame can add more mass and he’ll need to, he is good enough to be considered a full positional flexibility guy but his slender body type will need to be adapted to go from ACC requirments to NFL.
  • He is still young as he’s a junior so he has plenty of room to expand his skills.
  • Despite his lighter size I think he gets good kickback on his blocks, he steps into them with good timing and gets his arms into full extension with well positioned elbows.

Ryan’s Summary

Life in the ACC means everyone is slim and fast so to make the move to the pros I’d like
to see Oronde add some weight (he already went up by 7 lbs over the last three months) but
if he does build in more functional strength to finish blocks better especially in the box
then I think he’s a slept on tight end prospect that can grow into a three down threat.
His route running is sound if not spectacular but his catch radius, nimble footwork and
surpring blocking prowess should mean he’s taken earleir than people are expecting. I
really like his blocking out in space so look for a team like the Chiefs to pursue him as
they utlize stacks and bunches amongst the most in the league.
