Ryan’s Notes
Positives
- His blend of power and speed is rare, he can bullrush with force and then bend to the outside to win with speed.
- His flexibility is outstanding, he can bend at angles most players his size cannot and he uses this to slip under blocks.
- His violence and effort are always at 100%, he plays with a nasty streak that you want to see in an edge player.
- His instincts to find the ball are fantastic, he sniffs out misdirection and doesn’t bite too hard on fakes.
- His lateral quickness is a huge asset, he flows down the line with ease and covers a lot of ground against the run.
- His punch and hand fighting skills are advanced for his age, he’s clearly been coached well and you can see it in his rip and swim moves.
- Against Boise he showed his sideline to sideline ability to chase down Jeanty on a swing pass, not many players can make that play.
Negatives
- His over eagerness leads to him being manipulated by clever play design, he can overrun the play.
- His anchor against the run could be better, bigger tackles can move him if they get their hands inside early.
- He sometimes relies too much on his athleticism and needs to be more consistent with his technique to beat better lineman.
- He doesn’t have many pass rush moves beyond his go-to speed and power, he needs to develop a deeper arsenal.
Ryan’s Summary
Abdul Carter is an explosive edge rusher with rare athletic traits that make him a nightmare for offensive tackles. His combination of speed, power and flexibility allows him to win in multiple ways, though he needs to refine his technique and develop a broader pass rush plan to reach his full potential. His effort and instincts make him a safe bet to be an impact player early in his career, though he’ll need to improve his anchor and discipline to handle NFL linemen consistently. He’s a top tier prospect who should hear his name called early on Day 1.
