Ryan’s Notes
Positives
- His blend of lateral agility, burst off of cuts and contact balance is outstanding.
- Against Penn State the early returns were poor but there was nothing to be done about that with no gaps even slightly open, he did however show off some decent pass protection reps including meeting Abdul Carter square in the B gap and stone walking him.
- In that game he took a swing screen for 9 yards when it should have been a TFL; he cut inside the first block, sat a squared up safety down and cut inside again which should have broken big but his own lineman hit him into another tackle which he dragged for 3 more yards.
- His low action footwork gets him out of trouble as he can adjust on the fly, he makes second level defenders miss with ease as he can keep his hips level, and separate his torsion between his upper body and legs which means he’s always looking for the next move.
- His lateral agility is just as good, the play where he sells the fake on the counter very well before breaking back to the opposite sideline is flat out outstanding. He broke three tackles that were dead to rights which wasn’t even including guys who over committed.
- He has details, explosive movement skills and power to handle everything a back needs… and at the point of writing this I have only watched 20 snaps.
- He has the patience to set up blocks and a nice feel for timing to match with it, he’s not afraid to decelerate to allow the blocking concept to develop, always trusting in his abilities to get him out of a bind should the scheme not be sound.
- His vision and read speed are very good too, whilst it may seem like he sometimes runs into traffic against better teams you can see on the endzone angle that he is processing the stacked boxes he was faced with towards the end of the season.
- It always takes more than one guy to bring him down and he makes them work for it with low, powerful strides that keep his central mass low to the floor.
- His speed through the handoff mesh and to the line is impressive and whilst he may not have elite acceleration this is where the milliseconds matter.
- Jeanty has a smooth catch action and doesn’t need to slow his lower half down to take in passes.
- Jeanty is going to be a problem in the NFL if defenses stick to Quarters because he will not be taken down by ankle grabs by skinny corners, he can open things up in a special way due to the attention it requires to handle his skills.
- Boise State did well to build an offense around him, the fact he almost (and should of) won a heisman with no other stars on the team yet they reached the CFB finals was really impressive.
- Ashton can find the hard yards and take a gap worth 3 yards and turn it into 7 just as well as he can expose a crease for all its worth.
- He was in a gap scheme at Boise where they ran a lot of Duo but he should have no problem on zone concepts as the reads are similar although I’d argue to keep him in a power scheme due to his block control and excellent feel for tempo.
Negatives
- He, like many star RBs before him (like Saquon), believes in himself a bit too much at times and it means he doesn’t give up on plays and can cause either TFLs or even fumbles but saying that he only spilled 4 balls on the year.
- The only even slightly gripe I have with his tape is he doesn’t burst through the second level with elite speed like a Jahmyr Gibbs type but that is rare ground and he is plenty fast enough, just look at the amount of breakaway score he had, that said you can see why he doesn’t want to test as it will only hurt his stock.
Ryan’s Summary
I was aware of the hype going into the tape and that often means I try to find weaknesses before I heap praise but with Jeanty there are no real flaw to his game to focus on so you just end up sounding like every other analyst out there as you enjoy his film. Jeanty has every single attribute you look for in a running back; his blend of strength, technical ability, vision, toughness, explosive movement skills, hands and awareness means he can do anything you need him to. The one area of his game his junior year didn’t feature much of was his receiveing threat but his sophomore year featured plenty of it with 43 catches and 569 yards.Jeanty is the ultimate power back with better than expected elusiveness which is a potent combination. I think if anything the football world is sleeping on him due to fatigue from the Heisman season until now. I watched the Penn State game as it was his worst by the numbers and they are the best defense he faced all season yet I still walked away thinking how impressive he was. Whilst I hate how over used the generational tag is he comes close to warranting it, to put it this way I think he’s a better prospect that Bijan and the best since Saquon.
