Ryan’s Notes

  • Michigan: Helm’s stance and technique are textbook and you can tell he’s spent a lot of time perfecting how he operates when in-line as there’s a lot of controlled power to his game.Got his hands on three defenders on a tunnel screen which was a positive on a play where he only needs minor contact.
  • He just does things well, solid efficiency on his release, knows the playbook well enough and can read coverage, he’s a QB friendly guy but he lacks any kind of explosion.
  • He doesn’t power through tackles and he is nowhere near close enough to pull away from anyone so whilst his floor is high, his ceiling is lower than others in this class.
  • His vertical game is decent, he can clearly expose coverage gaps and he uses his long frame very well especially at the catch point and I think his game here can expand.
  • His in-line blocking is very good and he is able to set wide with his strong frame and clamp onto Edge players who want to control the rep with their arms, I’ll wait for his official measureables but it seems like his long arms are a weapon in more ways than one.

Ryan’s Summary

Every year I find a tight end like this and I underrate solid all around players who you
can set your watch to. I will try to avoid that with Gunnar because I also see how he
could grow with a bigger role as he fits more with pro offenses than he does at college.
He is a big boy that moves well and if he wasn’t being compared to Loveland as a Y, he’d
be considered like a Trey McBride prospect who can be a three down B+ guy to move the
chains when needed.
