Ryan’s Notes

Positives

  • Plays with a high hip and pad level but he’s still able to get under and dig out with impressive back strength.
  • He has a really quick short shuffle style pass set which puts him in position to be in control at all times.
  • On run blocks he fires out to meet his targets early without hesitation or false steps, he is sudden and violent at the point of contact driving back with a solid stance.
  • His pulling snaps ended early for reasons out of his control but he can definitely move.
  • I like that he has various tools to rely on but they all look the same, his snatch and trap is identical to his swipe and lean. To do these all takes quick and accurate hands which he definitely has as well.
  • Once he gets his hands inside it’s really tough to escape as he’s able to mirror laterally quite well, enough for interior lineman at least. He uses his size well enabling him to play with patience, he drifts inside on opposite zone runs keeping pursuers at bay with a long arm before slamming into linebackers who think they have him beaten for speed.
  • He really clears out when he needs to, he’s like a lock on rugby union seeing a scrum half standing over an open ruck

Negatives

  • I like his ability to match inside moves but he commits too far and his recovery is poor so for him to leave his QB open is a risk.
  • Played both tackle spots but has been projected to move inside, he has the arm length to play outside but might be lacking the true elite athletic ability to get out to meet speed rushers.
  • Whilst I think his feet are fast enough it’s his stiff hips that stop me projecting his ceiling as higher, he’s very up and down in his knee action and it means he relies on those quick feet to create the lateral momentum to change direction which is not conducive to success at the next level.

Ryan’s Summary

Jonah projects as a punishing guard convert who can use his surprisingly quick short area quickness to patrol inside on pass reps and drive gaps open on run concepts. His lack of elite movement skills, particularly his stiff hips, may limit interest but I think he can make the switch to be the leagues next T to big G and adapt to a mauling role on a team that likes to pin and pull. His lack of guard tape will mean a slower transition and his path to success may need a team who is afforded patience.
