Ryan’s Notes
Positives
- His size and strength are his best weapons as he is able to bench blockers off of him to control the rep with his 34.5″ arms (81st percentile) pushing lineman onto their toes
- He has a nice swim move that he uses to surge forward through traffic on gap run concepts, it’s often like he’s wading through them all to get to the ball carrier
- Despite his size he looks fluid in space and is able to drop back into coverage when required which gives him a unique trait as a powerful edge player
- When he dives inside it is a powerful display as he can take two or three blockers with him, his mass just drags people along
- He uses his superb wingspan (86th percentile) to disrupt low passes off the edge, if your quarterback is smaller he will wipe out the flats as he can just cover so much air
- Williams hunts well as fixates on the ball carrier and will be patient in squeezing the gaps shut for them often swimming back upfield to collapse the pocket upwards
- A man this big should be as light on his feet as he is, he can spring out of his breaks like a lighter tight end, this was on display on his FF vs Texas where he spun out of his pass rush to meet the tunnel screen runner as he took his first steps, even if he didn’t cause the fumble I’m sure the guy dropped the ball out of shock
- His blend of athletic fluidity in space and power allows him to play a huge variety of roles, he should never leave the field no matter where he lands: he can play 3t to a 7t and flex between odd and even fronts
- I think his best abilities show up when he’s in a 4t as the DE in an odd front as he’s not afraid to play through the tackle’s inside shoulder.
Negatives
- He is all power and very little finesse which is fine if he is able to dominate at the next level but it concerns me how he is missing proper pass rushing techniques because it leaves him nowhere to go
- I am not convinced by the functional play strength of his lower half as when he gets chest to chest with blockers he is often stonewalled and isn’t able to drive from this vertical position
- As much as I love his violent kniving inside he does turn his shoulders to lean and drive but smarter lineman have leveraged his downward force into him being on the floor, I feel like this poor technique will be further exposed at the next level
- Whilst he can win the early phase of the block I think he gets a bit stuck at the top of blocks, he needs to learn to use his assertive physical strength in more ways such as a push-pull move.
Ryan’s Summary
Mykel is a physical force built in a way that shouldn’t be possible. He is a disruptive powerhouse that will wreak run concepts no matter what else he can add. I have my doubts about his technical abilities particularly as he leans into blockers to avoid going chest to chest with lineman as that’s where he struggles to counter. Overall he is a gradual suffocating force that’s going to make it hard to play against him which is a skill set a lot of teams look for however his game winning moments are few and far between and I’d expect more splash plays for someone of his physical stature, I attribute this to his lack of developed technical skills and that’s where my questions lie with him going forwards.
