This might be blasphemy around here, but is it time to have a serious discussion about Herbert? So far we have seen him play with bad coaching, terrible defenses, bad OL play and suspect weapons while still being able to pull the team out of the fire with some God mode performances and put up some gaudy numbers. Those prove that the elite talent and the competitiveness is there, but does anyone get the feeling that he is a Josh Alen or Tom Brady or Big Ben type of player that wills his team to victory in a game when the pieces around him are not playing up to par or when the game is a hard nosed dogfight? Has that sheer will been beaten out of him by the organizational failures and rotating schemes? Is he a talented QB that needs everything around him to be built perfectly and function properly to succeed? Is he not demanding enough of his teammates to elevate their play? Is his demeaner to low key to pressure the organization, coaches and teammates to a higher standard? It is definitely an interesting topic to discuss going into year 7 of his career.

I love Herbert and, from a purely physical talent standpoint, he’s damn near the perfect QB.
BUT…..I can understand your questions and agree with them to some degree. A rotating cast of OC’s can’t help. He’s played behind sub-par offensive lines most of his pro career. He saw, I’m certain, how similar circumstances negatively affected Rivers’ career. I’d frankly be quite surprised if he’s NOT feeling beat down and dismayed right now.
Does he have the competitive fire to win a championship? To inspire his teammates? To kick their asses into shape when they need it? I frankly don’t know because 99% of the time he’s externally so low key.
I certainly don’t think Herbert is the biggest problem this team has. But is he a guy who can overcome the other issues, especially against playoff caliber teams? To date, the answer has to be regrettably no. Perhaps part of the answer is for Harbaugh to stop blowing smoke up Herbert’s ass and hold him more accountable.
