2026 NFL DRAFT

PROSPECT PROFILE

KEITH ABNEY II

CB, Arizona State 5-10, 185

Strengths

  • Best contested catch disruptor in the class. He is extremely good at timing and attacking the ball at its high point
  • Can play boundary or slot very well
  • Tough, sound tackler who wraps and finishes
  • Shows good feel in zone to pass off receivers and is good coming downhill
  • Shows enough fluidity in turn and trail to be effective in man coverage and carrying longer routes

Weaknesses

  • Has a reckless tendency that leads to flags and misguided reps
  • Can take risks in zone looking to make the big play instead of having patience in structure
  • Can be easily blocked by bigger tight ends and linemen in space
  • Struggles with stutter release which create timing and balance issues
  • Frame and play strength can be an issue

Keith Abney II is the kind of player that doesn’t have huge flashes every game, but when you talk to teammates and coaches, they rave about him. Some guys just have a knack for grinding out reps, always being around the ball, and making the plays when they present themselves. That is Keith Abney in a nutshell, he’s a football player. Not to say that he is pedestrian, but I would not call him elite in any category except his timing and ferocity in contested catches. He plays bigger than his size, which can be a real factor at the next level when he is taking on bigger, sturdier opponents. While he has the ability to play man or zone as a boundary CB or from the slot, his lack of size shows up on tape which takes him out of consideration to be a CB1 at the next level.

I do not expect Abney to be a round one selection unless some GM absolutely falls in love with his competitiveness and contested catch ability, but I do not expect him to last until round three. He is squarely a second-round prospect in my book and most likely in the 36-60 range. With that being said, I absolutely love Keith Abney as a prospect. He is the type of guy that winning teams have on their roster. He’s a tough, competitive, consistent player who gives you everything he has, even if the skills aren’t refined. Any defensive coordinator can find a home for his skillset on the defense especially in a heavier zone scheme defense with some man capability. I think he would be a good fit for the Los Angeles Chargers, but I am not sure if he has an elite enough skillset to make him a bigger priority over some other glaring positional needs on their roster. I think he could still be in play at 2.55, depending on who is available.
