Ryan’s Notes
Positives
- First play on tape and you see the appeal with Cam, he bounces out of one closed hole, then bounces again to find the edge where he stiff arms a safety before getting around the corner all the way to the sideline to turn what should have been a run stuff into 8 yards.
- He bounces off tackles for fun and itโs pretty special to see how often he was able to fool defenses into thinking it was over only to keep rumbling for another 10, 20 or even 50 yards.
- I think Cam has a natural ability to steer through traffic and be ready for contact when it comes meaning he can bounce off but this isn’t due to strength/power, it’s more balance and desire.
Negatives
- Overall I’m not sure if the best of his skills are going to translate into a back that can contribute at the next level. He has little to no burst or quick twitch movements, he has no explosive traits and when he tests poorly people are going to send him down to where he should have been on their boards in the first place.
- Even when it comes to things that don’t require athletic skills he is found lacking, I don’t see him setting up blocks or controlling tempo with patience.
- On third down he isn’t trusted with pass pro and barely even gets a look from his QB as he runs routes away from his half field reads.
- With the ball in his hands he rarely makes anyone miss, he will ride an opening for a few yards making his tackler go backwards but he won’t break or pry these opportunities open.
- I really saw his limitations pop up time and time again against the Texas run defense which was outstanding but this isn’t even close to the calibre of NFL standards so he better get comfortable with not being able to break tackles in the manner he does.
Ryan’s Summary
I flat out do not see the hype with Cam and I’m glad that most draft analysts have seen the light that the media hasn’t. He has no twitch, burst or explosive athletic traits and his technical work is lacking the details NFL backs need without being an elite movement skills. I could see a path to him becoming an effective backup for a couple of games a season behind a solid line but his ceiling has already been reached in my opinion.
