Even with the NFL draft months away, it is never to early to start looking at some of the many prospects that will be future NFL players. There will be more comprehensive profiles completed, and Big Boards assembled as the draft draws closer, especially after the offseason All Star events and NFL Combine are completed, and more tape is studied. However, this preview series will give a brief view at this point to some of the popular players we will hear about as potential first or second round picks in April, and if they could be a fit for the Los Angeles Chargers.
Shavon Revel is the classic evaluation argument of traits vs production. When looking at his size and speed profile he fits the bill for an athletic, tall, boundary corner who knows how to use his size. His best attribute is his aggression in press man where he loves to get his hands on the receiver and bully them. Revel’s aggression is also seen in his willingness to come downhill and punish people in run support. Power and aggression are not his only attributes as he is very athletic and smooth in his trail to turn technique and does a good job of planting and driving in zone coverage. The recovery speed he possesses is elite, so he is not often beaten over the top on straight go routes and can adjust quickly if he takes a false step or misread in coverage. As I said, there is a large pure talent base in his repertoire, but he does not have a ton of reps or production to back it up.
Since he was a JUCO product before bursting onto the scene at East Carolina, he is very raw and lacks proper technique. Often, he relies on his talent to bail him out in coverage, and when he gets beat, he has a tendency to panic, especially off the line in missed or mistimed jams where he is behind in the rep quickly. This causes him to react by face guarding the receiver and contacting him without ever getting his head around to make a sound play on the ball. Maybe because he has had some success with this he has a tendency to repeat it, but this style will be flag machine in the NFL. Also, he has a tendency to get caught up watching the backfield. Maybe he is trying to make a read for a big play, but I saw a few occasions that he loses focus of his responsibility. In these reps he just allows his man to go downfield uncovered where there is not supposed to be safety help over the top at all. Another concern for Revel is his torn ACL suffered in September of ’24 which will limit his testing ability in the pre-draft process and put his availability to start the ’25 season on time into question. For a player that leans on his athleticism as heavily as Revel does, this injury could be a major setback for him going forward.
Even though he has limited tape, questionable technique and a medical concern, simp evaluators will still salivate over his size and physical gifts. Depending on how the board falls I still think someone will take the risk to make him a first round selection, but the medical concern could easily push him into round 2. His game reminds me of a way more athletic but way less refined, TJ Tampa, where physicality and size are his calling cards.
I do not think he is a fit with the Chargers, nor would I select him. While he has everything you look for physically from a boundary corner, his medicals and very, very raw technique made him a hard evaluation for me. Add in the fact that he was essentially a walk on at ECSU after an open tryout because of his 4.3 speed and flashed for such a short time before being injured, and it is a hard pass for me. Even with the talent that is evident, he seems like a high risk project that I would not be interested in investing in.
Hey Erick. Just a suggestion. It might be worth inserting the player's name into the title of your posts for each of the 10 players you've written up.
I'm just starting to get through the draft tape now (starting with the Edge class), and if I've got something to add to any of your profiles I'll leave a comment. But without the player in the article title it's more effort to locate the player.
