Ryan’s Notes
- PSU: First play and you can see the appeal with his fast seam route and solid catch which he had to see through contact whilst sinking to the ground to protect the ball from closing defenders.
- He presented himself well on an in-line block but at 230 he’s going to struggle to take on actual lineman no matter how tenancious he was.
- He shows good burst off of a low skip to break out laterally but the same can’t be said when he’s in full stride as he needs a few gather steps to turn.
- Froze a safety on a leak route which he sold very well (showing a good understanding of tempo) with a very nice stutter move, he does seem a threat with the ball in his hands.
- Not an accomplished blocker and gets himself into trouble when trying to fire off on guys who are in control.
- Tried a headfake on a crossing route (twice) but the defender stayed in his hip pocket, needs to committ to the sell or adjust his route here.
- It’s shown itself a few times against an elite defense full of future pros that he can’t clear out run lanes due to his lack of strength in relation to his mass.
- His vertical threat is real and if he can show he can climb the ladder and be a redzone threat then he will fly up boards.
- Don’t like his footwork and vision on screens, it’s about single plant reads and firing off but he takes too long to decide and doesn’t take the ball in a stance that will give him the opportunity to get yards.
- His hands are okay but I don’t like how he has to almost scoop passes into his body, he prefers an underhand technique which is not condusive to success at any level.
- His stance and technique are pretty raw too, I’d like to see some more precision in how he builds momentum however with proper NFL coaching this could come.
Ryan’s Summary
A seam threat vertical focused tight end with some blocking upside Fannin Jr. provides
some excitement as a player who can grow into a move significant role. He will need to add
more mass to play in-line but he could be a nice big slot option for a team in 12
personnel. He has the athleticism to move around but he looks uncomfortable the closer he
is to the ball. As a long term prospect he has upside but his narrow skillset puts me off
and if I’m taking a guy in the first two rounds he needs to be able to contribute across
the board and play with better technique especially he lacks the strength to block.
