Ryan’s Notes

Positives

  • Low controlled stance where his center of gravity is an asset, shoulder pads stay level at all times as he keeps his footwork even and balanced.
  • Poised but powerful and combine that with excellent footwork and you start to see a player with real potential.
  • His contact balance and burst are on display in bucket loads, you give him half a hole with half a tackler and it won’t be enough.
  • He is elusive too with a savage jump cut where he gets right down into his knees.
  • His elite athleticism is all over the tape too, he cleared a guy on a hurdle who was aiming for his hips from a complete standstill. He has the patience to read blocks but he doesn’t hang around or freeze his feet, he is quick to make decisions and he accelerates into the gap once he makes a read.
  • As fast as he is through short spaces his long speed is even better, good luck keeping up with him if you’re chasing and safeties will need to take conservative angles to put a cap on his yardage.
  • His testing reflected this too, man what a player.
  • He is not a vertically only mover, his lateral agility and one cut moves are just as deadly.
  • He is a fighter too, I really like his refusal to go down as he will spin, bounce and reset anyway he can for another half yard.

Negatives

  • The only things he seems to lack are the mass to get three yards in a closed gap and third down work as I am yet to see a pass pro rep, catch or even a route. This is mainly because of the RPO based system UCF runs with Harvey himself being an integral part of it even on third down.
  • You could use the lacking strength of UCF’s opponents as a stick to beat his talent with but his OL were not getting gaps open against these fronts so I think that puts him on an even playing field.
  • RJ finds yards no one else can see on really tough looking situations, I realise his resilience can lead to negative plays including losing the ball which he has done throughout his college career. This is where I need to see some improvement.

Ryan’s Summary

The former quarterback from Viriginia has turned his body into one most running backs would recognise as ideal and he has not stopped there. His athletic abilities have been honed into a dangerous weapon that can hurt you in multiple ways. His blend of speed, vision, burst and contact balance is one I have seen work to very good effect even in backs who are a little undersized. I am a big fan of his tape and I see huge potential for him at the next level. If he was two inches taller he would be close to the top of this board and in other classes he would have been the best back.
