Ryan’s Notes

Positives

  • His movement skills improvement from 2023 to 2024 cannot be overstated. He was a clap hands, flat footed, bent knees guy who looked fresh out of a JV high school game against Michigan but he looked like a comfortable athlete with spring in his toes after one off-season. I’d be willing to bet on his improvement coming again especially with an extended break due to his ACL tear.
  • I really liked how he was used in his junior year where their defensive coordinator just wanted him to wreak havoc outside the tackles. His best tape actually came in these positions and with his combination of size and physicality, teams could look to use him in a hybrid apex role to take on tight ends.
  • Shavon has a natural draw to the ball and can cover a lot of ground when itโ€™s in the air so he is a threat to break up passes even when it looks like there is a window. That said his hands are not great and he should have created more turnovers than he did.

Negatives

  • His zone awareness and movement skills are unpolished and to be honest not good enough even for his lack of time on task. His awareness in shuffle is poor and although he has the profile of a rangy Cover 3 corner, he looks to really struggle with the spacing control and positioning required to excel.
  • He came out of the Michigan game well but their receiver talent wasnโ€™t elite and he was hidden from Roman Wilson as he was in the slot so we are yet to see him take on anyone with explosive talent given the lack of elite teams on East Carolinaโ€™s schedule.
  • Although his man coverage is better, his preference to play soft press despite his superior size is telling of his skillset. His hip speed in the transition is very good and he uses it as a weapon but his footwork is not on the same level and he puts himself into sticky situations when he gets in too close.
  • His off-man coverage is below par, he lacks the feel for allowing the space to close and struggles to match route tempo
  • Whilst he is a physical force his tackling mechanics are poor and needs to be coached up to NFL standards

Ryan’s Summary

Overall Shavon Revel Jr is a raw, toolsy athlete who uses his length, speed and physicality to beat up on anyone who is not technical enough to open him up. His tape is a mixed bag with explosive highlights that are counteracted by some real head scratching plays. For me this shows a lot of talent but a lack of progression. I think it will take a team to fall in love with his physical ability which is tough due to his lack of availability after his ACL tear in September. He will likely still be in Phase IV of his rehabilitation by the time of the draft so whilst he could be ready by camp, it will hurt his stock to not be able to test. His fit is the biggest question as his man skills are his best trait but lacks the details right now and would be a developmental guy so the question is how high would teams be willing to take someone they will have to wait on? Additional note about his experience: Revel’s rawness has come from having a messy journey through High School, JUCO and college. He went unsigned so went to Louisberg College (JUCO), His junior year at JUCO was wiped out through COVID and he only played 6 games which earned him a 3 star ranking. ECU saw his potential but he only featured as a special teamer in 2022 over 5 games before starting in 2023. This was his only full season though as he tore his ACL in 2024 after 3 games. This means he has only played 26 games in total (15 as a starter) since high school despite being a five year player who will be 23 y/o by the draft.
