How I think things will fall out the remainder of the season:
The Colts are at least trying something.
Dumping MM may be a start but it’s not the whole answer. And we may not live long enough to see that.
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7703503/2026/10/18/chargers-offense-mike-mcdaniel-chiefs/?source=dailyemail&campaign=601983&userId=12566676&source=dailyemail
Gist of the article is the triple whammy. Bad offensive line, Bad WR group, and overly complex offensive system that is a poor fit for Herbert’s processing speed.
Blame is organizational negligence. They didn’t spend their cap resources. They didn’t address the O-Line enough, their weapons are weak, and the lipstick on the pig didn’t change the pig. Spanos/Hortiz/Harbaugh are the culprits. McDaniel will take the hit.
McDaniel deserves a hit too. You’re right about the rest (though I question the part about Herbert’s processing speed), but his “smartest guy in the room” BS playcalling doesn’t get a pass either.
Well its day 2 of the bye week and we’ve seen nothing so far. The longer this goes into the week without anything happening, the less likely any significant change happens.
Nothing is going to happen. Harbaugh makes too much $ to fire (and I, as a minority opinion, would not fire him), McDaniel was promised free-reign on the offense and the organization is sticking with that committment.
My opinion is that:
What comes next? Who the fuck knows. It was pretty clear that Staley was a dead man walking. Looking back, I can clearly see that decision being delayed. I do not see the same situation now. The Spanos family has hitched their wagon to Harbaugh. Good decision? TBD. 2 years ago, I thought the answer was yes. 2 months ago, I was optimistic about what a “top-5” play caller could do with a good defense with a young up-and-coming DC and a winning HC. I thought that was an equation for a championship.
Today? My only hope is that this very expensive, experienced staff can self-reflect and sort their shit out. If this crap offense continues, the Spanos may be forced to make a change, which will likely not be good in an off-season where all the quality assistants have been hired as HCs.
Just saw videos from yesterdays practice where Herbert was standing with MM. NOTHING is changing. Seems like Harbaugh again spewed more bullshit at his presser about “looking into everything” to fix the offense. I don’t know what the fuck he’s been looking at since week 1 but he isn’t fixing shit. Maybe he is embracing the tank by keeping the status quo? Maybe MM sold him on the offensive install being a two year process? Who knows? But don’t worry everyone, we might be 0-6, but the band is back together to take on the next 11 games after the bye, so in case you weren’t tired of poorly schemed and coached offensive football you still have a chance to get your fill!!!!
I don’t think Jim or the Spanos are going to fire a dude the worked hard to recruit (and are paying) after 7 disappointing games. I actually agree with that decision (again, I know this is probably not popular). I don’t think it’s helpful for future recruiting if you don’t give a guy with McDaniel’s resume the opportunity to right the ship.
That said, if the offense looks this bad in week 18, I think the Chargers have to look inward and evaluate everything on the offensive side of the ball. That includes McDaniel.
Don’t change anything. Embrace the tank.
I hope they don’t change anything. Let them stew on their arrogance for another 11 games. Harbaugh sold us a bill of goods as a tough, hard nosed, trenches centric coach because that’s what we wanted to hear. 3 years in and the team is as soft as ever and the roster has regressed under him. Now we see the tough guy come out potentially firing staff? Where’s the arrogance now? F him and his Robin like sidekick cohort in Hortiz. Treating the fans like morons by drafting late day 3 OL to “shut the fans up”, while he plays Scrooge McDuck with the cap space and treats comp picks like Viagra. I guess the fans are smarter than him since we all knew this OL roster was dogshit back in May.
Because the Spanii are cheap as shit, we can probably expect no real change, because they aren’t going to pay people to go away, especially at high salaries, so Ficken or McDaniel will fall on the sword, but the real problems exist much higher in the front office.
To your point….

But sure….Harbaugh was the answer.
I’ve mostly held off but guess what? I DID tell everyone here that Harbaugh wasn’t the answer, until I got overwhelmed into silence.
OK. It doesn’t feel good or make me happy being right about this goofy ass impostor.
And the team will stay on rinse and repeat until ownership changes and the clueless nepo babies are gone. Sad but true.
This was always going to be the reality of the Harbaugh era and there was always going to be a limited duration for how long it would run its course before the whole organization became completely soured like he had done at Michigan and San Francisco. You weren’t the only one who griped at the hire for some of these same reasons.
He’s like Private Equity/Gordon Gecko in that he “wins” by leaching everything out of the organization and all of his stupid sayings ultimately just make everyone more contemptuous instead of feeling inspired.
They’ll either completely clean house starting with John Spanos and make 1 final attempt at building it right with Justin or else they’ll need to trade him.
I was the only one I remember on this site pushing back. Maybe not.
The only way lil Johnny goes away is if the team is sold or at least the Spanii are reduced to a minority stake. That’s the sad reality of it.
Justin, IMO, should request a trade. Archie was right.
The only problem is that he won a National Championship in Michigan and at least got to a Super Bowl with SF. We couldn’t even win the AFCW.
Not sure how I really feel about the NCAA but let’s not forget….Harbaugh got a 10 year suspension after “winning” that championship.
And he ran out of SF after going 8-8. Not exactly admirable, IMO.
Can’t even score a touchdown.
Boy that Mike McDaniel sure is an offensive genius. 🙄
That was pretty terrible. I’m at a loss. The defense looks good. The offense is worse than doing nothing. Giving the ball away. No running game. Just awful.
Looking ahead, there’s really only 3 games that the Chargers could win: Jets, Dolphins and Bucs. 3-14? How in the world does a team with this staff go 3-14?
I’ve watched those teams play the last few weeks. The Bucs should have gotten win #2 yesterday and the Jets gave the Pats all they could handle in Foxboro yesterday, so those games are no lock. The Dolphins are a different story, so maybe that’s probably the only win I could see unless they miraculously steal one somewhere or they beat a Broncos team week 18 that is sitting everyone, because Harbaugh will stupidly be hell bent on winning that game to get momentum for ’27 or whatever inane bullshit drivel platitude he spews about it.
Most of what he says is inane drivel. When I said that 3 years ago some here told me to stop making it personal (not you, Erick).
Does it feel personal now???
I’ll be at the Jets game so I’d selfishly like a win there.
Otherwise? I’m currently beyond giving a fuck.
Ben Johnson looks pretty damn good now, huh?
I can’t even hate watch this shit show.
Bills Raiders it is.
Yeah…..gonna be a bloodbath. Not sure I care to listen/watch those racist chants and chops today.
