Ryan’s Notes

Positives

  • Henderson has clean footwork and polished mechanics that have been refined by his high snap experience however that isn’t to say he has worn out any explosive traits completely.
  • Henderson will keep your offense on pace and honest as he makes the most of blocks by firing through them within tempo but always looking for the next crease to expose.
  • His best trait is turning open gaps into big gains by utilizing his elite lateral quickness and incredible bend to get from the second to the third level in a flash all whilst erasing safety angles.
  • His pass protection work is solid in the best possible way, he makes himself consistently available to his QB on the check down.
  • Against Notre Dame he showed some decent contact balance and you can see how as his footwork is always under control even when he’s faced with defenders he can’t see, his instincts have been built to take over without any panic movements.
  • Trey made a ridiculous grab in the 2nd quarter Vs ND on a wheel route, his ball tracking skills and soft hands were showcased on the highlight play on the big stage.
  • He may not be a highly detailed runner but he can press gaps open and adjust his footwork in enough time to open up holes at the line, he definitely has an understanding of how and where to do it, it’s just that he lacks the elite footspeed to get out of there in a flash.
  • Stopped on a dime on the motion counter concept to send the mike linebacker sailing past him in a really nice move that gained him another 5 yards even though he faced an unblocked defender.
  • It’s not a valuable trait at the next level but he is a sound lead blocker who has clearly enjoyed working in a two back set.
  • Henderson has the patience to wait for gaps to open and although his footwork here isn’t elite, it’s definitely good enough to avoid tripping over lineman legs and give himself some room to earn more yards.

Negatives

  • He plays to his stout posture which is good for some things but one thing he struggles with is getting skinny though blocks, he needs to learn to detach his hip rotation from his momentum in order to do this which is not an easy feat.
  • Between this and not being a true power back he seems like he will bounce off of NFL sized holes against teams that like to stack the box.

Ryan’s Summary

Henderson has a well rounded polish to his game that has come from being on the field since a freshman. I like his projection to a gap scheme team that has a more explosive back to pair him with but he could suffice as a three down back due to his abilities in pass protection and his hands/route running ability. His experience in RPO systems means he has developed a patience that will merge well with letting blocks develop and his skills match this style too. He’s fast enough to earn the yards available even if he lacks true explosive traits in either power or acceleration.
