2026 NFL DRAFT

PROSPECT PROFILE

COLTON HOOD

CB, TENNESSEE 6-0, 195

Strengths

  • Uses his physicality and punch to excel in press man
  • Competitive to his core fighting through the whistle on almost every rep
  • Comfortable playing off the line in zone coverage
  • Very fluid in his backpedal and when rotating to trail technique
  • Good burst and recognition coming downhill in zone
  • Has the closing speed to recover when beaten

Weaknesses

  • Not the soundest tackler in space
  • Has a tendency to be over aggressive at the LOS which can cause bad jams and quick beats off the line
  • Panics when beaten, and has trouble finding the football over the top
  • Can be to dependent on reading the QB in zone instead of a natural feel for the route concept, leading to some slow reactions

Colton Hood is a physical press man corner, who likes to win the rep at the LOS by disrupting the timing and route path. He is decent enough in zone coverage to not be a liability, but he is not the most comfortable player in that scenario repeatedly. He doesn’t have as much starting experience as other CB in this class. Hood got his first real opportunity last season after Jermod McCoy went down with a season ending injury opening the door to a starting role in the SEC where he excelled. He is still a raw prospect, but has the physical tools needed to be a complete player at the NFL level.

I think he is best suited for a press man coverage defense but has the ability to sit in short zones and react when needed. He is always not a consistent or willing tackler, which might be a sticking point for some defensive coordinators, but the coverage ability and physicality at the LOS are his calling card. I think he would be perfect for a Brian Flores defense that prioritizes a heavy blitz scheme where his press man style could excel. He would be good fits for New England or the New York Jets as well.

If Jesse Minter were still the DC I would not consider Hood to be a scheme fit, but while we know Chris O’Leary will have his defense rooted in the same concepts, it is yet to be seen if he prefers some more press man coverage which could make Hood a fit for the defense. However, I do not see Hood as a complete scheme fit and will most likely not be the BPA on the board at 1.22, but if the Chargers were to trade out of 1.22 he could be an option anywhere from pick 28-50.
