I finally felt like I could take some time to take a deep look at the Chargers roster situation now that the draft is behind us. I decided to write…
POSITIONAL BIG BOARD TOP 50 ** First Round Grade Caleb Downs- S Ohio State, 6-0, 206 ** Reuben Bain Jr- Edge Miami, 6-2, 263 ** Arvell Reese- Edge/LB…
It is clearly a very hard schedule. In most of the recent years I would’ve called this a “gauntlet” of sorts and predicted the team to only win 7 – 9 games.
This season, I think its simply going to come down to how well the new coordinators do. They are going to be the most meaningful changes to the team, far more than any of the draft picks or personnel changes. If everything clicks with McDaniel and we get a top 5 – 7 offense, then this team is going to win at least 10 games, and if we get that top 5 offense and a defense even close to Minter’s last season, this team should win 12 games and be a real contender.
If McDaniel and/or Leary stumble then that’s where I could see this team underperform. That, or a major injury (like to Herbert).
Great points. Well said.
If there are no major injuries that force key players like Herbert, Alt, Slater, Biadasz, McConkey, Hampton to miss at least several games:
Offense floor: top 5
Offense ceiling: best in NFL
If there are no major injuries that force key players like Mack, Tuli, Tart, Henley, James to miss at least several games:
Defense floor: top 20
Defense ceiling: top 10
If they hit both ceilings, they should win the division and have a great shot at the AFC 1 seed. If they hit both floors, they should still be a 10-11 win wild card team.
And then there’s this drivel from BFTB…dicks for clicks, Vox, or still just cheap bastards? lol
I guess those 2 options aren’t mutually exclusive. Sure makes me even more thankful for Stormcloud and the quality of analysis/discussion we have here.

If the Chargers avoid major injuries for a change, I think they win 13 games and the AFC West.
In year 3 for Hortiz and Harbaugh, it’s time to deliver a division title and at least one playoff win, and I think they will do it.
I certainly hope you’re right, Tau. It is time to deliver. KC has been proven mortal. I’m certainly not ready to now play second fiddle to Denver.
With the schedule being decently tough I think they need to win all the games they should win. I don’t want to see another Arizona game from 2024 or the Commanders or Jags game from last year where they were not ready to play. Good teams that are serious contenders don’t get blown out, and especially not at home.
No disputing that, tough schedule or no. Contenders beat who they should and at least some they possibly shouldn’t.
Here’s another pundit take on win probability for each game and total wins. Yes, I do realize it’s just one guy.

When I saw the schedule I counted 6 games that should be wins (Cards, LV 2x, Jets, Dolphins, Bucs). If they can go 5-5 in the other games, that’s 11-6. That could win the AFCW. The key is not “Chargering” one of the easier 6.
A few things with the schedule release:
I was a little disappointed. While he production was good, it skews to a much younger demographic. I have never played Halo so I was completely in the dark with the theme. So all of the characters and situations were completely foreign to me. I know the Chargers Media team is one of the best, but I think they have to choose a theme that is more all encompassing to the entire fan base. I am not an anime fan, but they presented that theme in a general sense and not specifically one anime show, so it worked.I remember in the offseason when we hired McDaniel everyone was in the “Super Bowl Window” camp and we already knew the opponents. Now that we know the order of games the same people are grumbling about how difficult it is and having us as a wild card team again. Where did the bravado go? If everyone believed this was a Super Bowl team back in January, this shouldn’t change it. Do you think the Chiefs or Bills or Ravens who play a first place schedule practically every year look at their schedule and deflate themselves to believe they are wild card material? There has to be a point where we believe we are in the elite tier of teams. I’m tired of the fans seeing names like Buffalo, Kansas City, Baltimore, San Francisco, Seattle, LA Rams or Houston on the schedule and chalking up losses. Team should be seeing us on the schedule and feel that way about us. You aren’t going to be facing the Jets every week. Eventually you are going to have to go up against the elite teams and win those games. Like Ric Flair said “If you want to be the best, you have beat the best.” Nobody expects us to win every one of those games, but if you don’t think they can compete and win some of those, how could you believe we were a SB contender in January? The Chargers have an elite HC, QB and OC. They retooled their weakest position group and added an elite pass rusher to the defense. Outside of major injuries to multiple key players there is no reason to think we can’t win the AFC West to start with. This might be the only year with McDaniel. If they aren’t going to contend now and announce themselves as an NFL elite, when is it going to happen?
In this article

the Chargers are mentioned twice, both times related to the Baltimore match-up. I think that’s pretty telling with regards to how this team is viewed.
At this point in the year (and thru training camp, barring major injuries), I try to be pretty optimistic. No difference this year. But I’m also at the “put up or shut up” stage with this staff. It’s year 3 and not close to a playoff win. That needs to change now.
Agreed. But to me the mentality has to change. You either believe this team deserves a seat at the table or it doesn’t, not if things “break right”. Good teams go into Buffalo and Baltimore and LA and expect to win games, not to fall back on “Any given Sunday” cliche as hope for a W. They don’t always win, but if you go in there feeling like a complete underdog, you don’t belong in the SB conversation in my book. It’s nuts on the table time.
That’s why I mentioned the article and how this team was mentioned. We either prove that we’re a team to be taken seriously by EVERY opponent or not. I remain in preseason cautiously optimistic mode but that’s not to be considered as giving anyone a pass. These goofy quotes by Harbaugh only go so far. It’s prove it time.
