This week’s installment of the Powderkeg Podcast comes in the form of a film breakdown which takes a closer look at what went wrong for Jesse Minter’s defense against Kliff Kingsbury and the Commanders. Washington’s offensive approach systematically attacked the Chargers’ structure, forcing mismatches and exposing soft spots in coverage throughout the afternoon. It was a sharp, well-executed plan that kept Minter’s group off balance once the scripted plays were done.
Kliff diagnosed how the Chargers would attempt to play against his scheme and realised if he pulled the hook defenders into the flats from Minter’s preferred two high zone looks, then he’d be able to dominate up and down the hash marks which is proven when you see Jayden Daniels’ pass chart from the game.
This forced Minter into more man coverage however that’s exactly where Kliff wanted him to go and it set up the next phase of his attacks. Minter was unable to plug all the gaps that man coverage presents, he simply didn’t have enough bodies to fit the run, spy the quarterback, cap the deep pass and cover the running back.
First Three Weeks (Weeks 1-3): 14.0% man coverage (16 of 114 pass plays)
Last Two Weeks (Weeks 4-5): 27.8% man coverage (15 of 54 pass plays)
This extended to the run game too, Kliff was able to manipulate the Chargers minus run fit scheme using Minter’s tendencies against himself which worked to open up the weakside edge as you will see in the video.
I’ll admit it; I underestimated Kingsbury and this offense. His in-game adjustments and sequencing were outstanding, and I won’t make that mistake again. The video is my attempt at illustrating how Kingsbury used formations and motions to dictate matchups, and where the Chargers failed to adapt in the right way.
For fans trying to understand how a game can unravel defensively despite largely solid individual performances, this breakdown is worth the time. It’s a clear-eyed look at what needs to change and how Minter can respond moving forward.
