Let's take a look at our new Chargers. This one kicks of with an analysis of Najee Harris, who I think fits the Harbaugh mold quite well.

I have this feeling the "weapon" added for Herbert in the draft at this point will be a RB. Unless Loveland falls or we trade up slightly, I don't see an impact TE coming in the draft. I would still like to add a WR in the first 2 rounds also. If Harris was there at 2.55 I would be pissed if we didn't grab him.

Team signed Tyler Conklin to a 1-year deal. If this means we punt on a TE in the draft, I’ll be very disappointed.

If Conklin signed a 1 year deal, he likely could be cut with minimal impact. So I could still see tham in on Goedert or Andrews if one is cut or becomes available for a cheap enough price. That seems unlikely, hence Conklin.

I think the Conklin signing means no TE before Day 3 of the draft. He provides a high floor option to pair with Dissly, and that should be good enough (barring injury) to enable the team to focus on other high priority needs on Days 1-2 of the draft, namely Edge, IDL, RB.

If Loveland is there at 22, the team should take him, regardless of Conklin. Conklin solves nothing short or long term. Dissly can give the team 500 yards, like last season. If Loveland is gone, Edge is the way. Very good DTs and RBs can be had on day 2. Not so much for Edge.

@unclejammsarmy I agree. Conklin does absolutely nothing to move that needle for me.

@buck-melanoma I think Edge should be the first round pick whether or not Loveland is there, provided an Edge the Chargers have graded as a top 15 player is available, which seems reasonably likely.

@tau837 I know you do and I'm fine with that direction. But I also think a pass-catching TE1 would unlock this offense's potential. Herbert deserves that.

I haven't been around in bit as I've been ill. But I'm watching. I, like a lot of other fans, was concerned with the lack of star FA signings. At this point, the Chef is rounding out depth and using this as the method for not backing themselves into a corner in the draft. I like what has happened lately. They can show the full process with strong draft. I'm excited to see it play out.

I'll keep battling and battling. With any luck, I'll be able to get to the stadium for the season opener in the fall. I'm may look different, but that won't change my passion.

@mongotesla Happy to see you comment and I hope you are okay - it sounds worrisome.

I'm content with where we are before the draft. I don't think we will see any other moves in FA before the draft. I hope we can trade for Andrews/Goedert if we miss out on a TE on day 1 and 2.

@bolt_dk Thank you.

Hitting on TE has to be near top of the list here. I trust them to recognize and act on the need. I also think that a good portion of the remaining resources will be dedicated to the offense.

Trey Lance? Is the Taylor Heinicke experiment over?

@buck-melanoma I very seriously doubt that. They signed him as a possible upside play. If he blows the doors off in training camp and preseason, I suppose Heinicke could get cut, but it seems much more likely Lance simply has a shot to earn the 53rd spot on the final roster as QB3. If so (or if ultimately on practice squad), he can run the scout team effectively when the Chargers are facing a mobile QB.

@tau837 but do we need a QB3 to take up that 53rd roster spot? I suppose one will get stashed on the PS as an emergency backup.

@buck-melanoma I would have QB3 on the practice squad, personally. Hopefully they gave him zero (or trivial) guaranteed money, making it easy to cut him later.

I don't see Lance as ever being likely to pan out as a NFL QB, so I wouldn't have signed him as QB3, whether or not they are giving him a legit chance to win the QB2 job.

I suppose they could want to move him to another position like WR but that seems like such a long shot that it doesn't seem worth any investment of effort, time, money. Plus, he would have to be willing to go all in on that to even give it a shot, and that seems unlikely.

Bottom line, I don't get it. But I have a hard time believing Heinicke won't be QB2.

@tau837 on the latest TDU podcast the GAC guys speculate it's to keep practices viable should Herbert miss time again.

OK. 🤷

@buck-melanoma Didn't get to this on the show but the  arguments in support of signing Lance IMO include:

  • He's 24.9 yo - really still a baby and more than two full years younger than Herbert.
  • Former high first round pick pedigree.
  • His most recent start in Wk 18 v the Commanders was arguably his best NFL start as a pro: 20/34, 244 yds, 6 carries, 28 yds.
    • Caveat: It's Wk 18!
  • Now the team really doesn't have to spend a Day 3 pick on a developmental QB or find one as a UDFA.

Harbaugh and Hortiz have already shown they don't mind former first round pick reclamation projects (eg, Alex Leatherwood) which makes sense since they have a good coaching staff.

I also remember being thoroughly impressed by Trey Lance's interviews all throughout the pre-draft process before the 49ers took him.

As Harbaugh says, competitors welcome!

@buck-melanoma I don’t think so, necessarily. I think it’s more of Hortiz churning the back of the roster. Now the team has Lance, Heinicke, and Stick. This is a signing that follows the “competitors welcome” ideal. The baseline of this roster looks far better now than it ever did under Telesco.
