Ryan’s Notes
Positives
- Super elusive in space, his shimmy is electric and has plenty of speed to matke the most of that space he creates.
- Lovely route for his first touchdown on the wheel vs Ohio State, his stutter move and late hands were impressive.
- His catch and move in space for his second touchdown was equally as good, he seems like a true passing back which is rarity these days.
- His lightening speed (98th percentile) shows up on tape consistently, Texas did a nice job of getting him the ball on looks where he could take a run up.
- Against Arkansas he got a lot more work and some encouraging signs were there as he showed some block patience and box footwork.
- Despite his smaller stature he gets involved in pass pro and can step into blitzers without fear.
Negatives
- He had a very limited role as the RB3 in Texas’ deep backfield raises questions. He was behind two sophomores on the depth chart which means light tread on the tyres but also is that because they’re better than him already or is he only explosive because of his small role.
- Blue lacks the size to win in the box and Texas knew this as a lot of his handoffs were outside tackle in big time games.
- Whilst he has a nice single cut move and a shimmy to go with it his evasive manoeuvres were a bit limited and whilst his seems harsh compared to my notes on other backs, they can win through contact with power where Jaydon can’t so he needs to avoid it wherever possible.
- He bounces runs into danger which can be forgiven on heavy touch backs on losing teams but not on light touch guys on powerhouses.
Ryan’s Summary
The fact that Blue took so long to rise in the ranks and was still out touched by two sophmores in his junior year is concerning however Blue has rightly come out in this draft class after his RB coach got hired by the Lions and there is a gap, both in this class and the league for third down backs. I think if he sticks to that role he can be a nice Day 3 addition but nobody should be pretending like he’s got three down upside and he lacks the footwork, vision and power to play between the tackles.
