Ryan’s Notes

Positives

  • Technician in all phases of his routes with a crazy release package, details to beat man in low and efficient speed cuts on longer developing plays.
  • He did something I have only seen the elite NFL receivers do by opening up into a full sprint dart stem before slamming the breaks on in two steps to break back to the flag on an deep angle route. It sprung him wide open for a big gain.
  • His feet can generate so much burst with every cut gaining distance and pushing him into more separation. This explosive ability is especially seen when coming down with the ball on screens, the force he is able to muster on his plant foot is outstanding.
  • Kyle’s 4.4 speed is legit and if anything he’s a faster player than his tests suggest. His long strides eat up ground and he carries on accelerating well into his routes so his route stamina is sound too.
  • Strong hands to pluck the ball out of the air. I love the way he attacks the ball to take it out the sky right in front of his eyes to be as late and efficient as possible, his speed carries to all areas of the field.
  • He gets in and out of his breaks so well, the highest compliment I can pay a receiver is that dynamic movements look easy to them.
  • He has reliable hands that avoid body catches and extends the ball away from defenders where possible, he throws late hands and prefers the ball over his shoulder which is a positive trait for a burner.
  • Williams can read zone coverage and sit down in windows he anticipates opening.
  • For a slighter guy his contact balance is decent and he can ride out weaker tackle attempts for further YAC.
  • His legs are powerfully built with big thighs so whilst he’s smaller, he can generate power from shorter steps. He clearly added mass before his final year.
  • I love his gate when he gets into a full sprint, his feet never come high off the ground and he doesn’t get deep into his knees on each stride meaning he can stay in control and necessary adjustments don’t slow him down.

Negatives

  • Doesn’t look to play through contact and takes the less physical route where possible. This speaks to the problems his slender frame will present at the next level.
  • Made a mental mistake where cut out of bounds to leave a 3rd down when he had the space to turn upfield, to his credit he saw this right after and looked disappointed in himself.
  • Whilst he is a willing blocker he is too light and gets thrown around but he doesn’t back away from it.
  • He sometimes swings his body back around to the ball causing him to over rotate and leave himself unable to adjust to the ball location.

Ryan’s Summary

Kyle is a rare blend of speed and technical ability that can create separation in so many ways it’s going to keep defenders up at night. His 4.4 time was a disservice to how quick he eats up ground with long strides to give him long speed to threaten safeties but when you add in a wild release package, fast footwork and a detailed knowledge of route running it’s not hard to see why he was absolutely torching everyone who was brave to line up against him at the senior bowl. He carries so much speed through his cuts and has explosive burst off of his plant feet to get out of breaks at breakneck speeds. His main weakness is going to be his size with a smaller 190 lbs / 5′ 10″ frame he won’t be playing through or over NFL size corners. Overall I think his ceiling is a long way from where he is now even though he has had five whole years at college. With a good landing spot he can be an instant WR2 with game breaking ability and he has genuine WR1 potential.
