Overall I like this mock. Maybe a little early for RB. I like Henderson but there are guys I also like later on. I'd probably swap an edge or DT in here.

@buck-melanoma I would have swapped the 2nd and 3rd Rd picks also. I would have went Edge Rd2 and RB Rd3. Plus, Umanmielen has some "maturity" issues that might not vibe with Harbaugh. I like Horton a lot. I don't think he will ever be a gamebreaker but he can fit the possession role vacated by Palmer, but with more explosive qualities. Everything from Rd5 on are dart throws.

@buck-melanoma That triple-dip at WR shows me that the writer was getting tired in the later rounds.

@buck-melanoma This draft stinks. Would rather have had Ezeiruaku over Williams and Higgins over Taylor. I'm not sure what some of these guys are watching, but this TE class is not good, yet I keep seeing columns spewing how good it is. Either guys don't do their homework or don't know what they are watching. The TE class is 2 stud players and a bunch of "JAGS". I don't want to add a mediocre player just to say we added to the position.

Decided to try Mock Draft Database for a quick 3 rounder. I would be thrilled with this draft. For me it's either TE or Edge in Rd1. You can still get a decent second tier Edge in Rd 2 (Sawyer, Jackson, Tuimoloau, Swinson), but the TE are off a cliff. DT is still flush with talent in Rd2, so I pivoted to IDL pass rush over Edge rush in Rd2 and I like the result. Maybe there's a chance an Edge slips to Rd4, but not a needle mover, so passing on one in the first 2 rounds could come back to bite me. This third round pick would be a dream IMO.

@buck-melanoma Agreed. The best pick is the third rounder. That board represents a rough scenario for us at 1.22. If that was the case its an easy rank for me of Ezeiruaku, Barron, Zabel.

@evolz3737 and I doubt that player will see the 3rd round.

@buck-melanoma In this scenario:

1.22 (22) - Kenneth Grant, IDL, Michigan -- Easy call.

2.23 (55) - TreVeyon Henderson, RB, Ohio State -- Here shown picked at #51, but partially predicated on Chargers taking RB Hampton at 1.22. Not taking him pushes him down and affects the other RB picks.

3.22 (86) - Josaiah Stewart, edge, Michigan -- Need an Edge, Michigan connection.

OR

3.22 (86) - Miles Frazier, G, LSU -- Long term starting guard.

Alternate take, if it isn't reasonable to assume getting Henderson at 2.23:

1.22 (22) - Kenneth Grant, IDL, Michigan -- Easy call.

2.23 (55) - J.T. Tuimoloau, Edge, Ohio State -- Best Edge available, but does he fit Chargers scheme well, i.e., what would his Chargers grade be?

3.22 (86) - Miles Frazier, G, LSU -- Long term starting guard.

Then would target RB in the 4th.

@buck-melanoma I really can't picture Hortiz taking a RB with the first pick. Maybe Jeanty, but there's no way he's slipping that far.

@blue-beers yeah, this is an example of pundit idiocy. The 3rd pick is alright but the player won't be there.

Not enthused about the McMillan pick but I can understand the logic. He just doesn't move the needle much for me.

@buck-melanoma I think it will be a moot point. I don't see him lasting until 1.22

I wanted to see a mock with no trades, where we took a different, but fantastic, player in Rd1 that I have yet to be seen mocked to us and see what the rest of the draft looked like. I pretty much took the BPA every round unless it was a QB and tried not to double dip if possible until we got into the last two rounds. While we didn't exactly get a need fit in Rd1, the draft looks very good. Got some immediate depth and an eye on some depth for next season. While passing on a pure Edge on the first two days wasn't ideal, the top two picks have plenty of pass rush potential. Also, I had to take a flier at TE. This proves that this roster still has a long way to go and not every position can be filled adequately, even with 10 draft picks. It still might be a year away from really being a top roster.

Not sure if anybody has watched Ransaw, but the guy might be a perfect late round fit in our scheme. He has ability to play all 3 levels but he is best as a big nickel or playing zone in sub packages. He has the speed to get deep (4.3 forty), but he is also a big hitter and sound tackler. He's just not a fluid athlete that can play man very well and he's not the biggest 5-11, 198. At the very least he will be a good ST player immediately.

@buck-melanoma Haha. It just worked out that way, but they are both reasonable players for day 3. Also I like JJ Pegues in that range as well.

@evolz3737 I think Tuten would add the lightning dimension to this backfield. My only concern is some ball security issues to be worked on.

Powell is a baller but not sure how well his game is gonna transition to the pros.

@buck-melanoma If this is how the 1st round shook out before our pick I would list our options as Barron, Ezeiruaku, Green, Emmanwori. I am NOT in favor of taking a RB in Rd 1 even if it’s Jeanty. Maybe if the roster is more stocked next year a Rd1 RB could make sense as a finishing piece, but we aren’t there yet. Still to many holes.

@evolz3737 completely agree about rb round 1. Maybe round 2 for the right guy....maybe.

I would absolutely take Jeanty at 22, but he won't be there so it doesn't matter. I wouldn't take any other RB at 55 unless Hampton or possibly Henderson make it there, which I doubt. I am expecting RB in 3rd or 4th round.

@tau837 I wouldn't even take Jeanty there. As Eric said, we have too many larger holes to fill to spend 1.22 on a rb in such a deep class.

@buck-melanoma My opinion based on how I expect the board to fall and based on the Chargers roster is that the Chargers should use 22 and 55 on Edge and IDL in either order, depending on who is available. Then I think they could choose a RB at 86.

If that was the scenario, I think Jeanty at 22 and Edge/IDL at 55 and 86 could easily be more valuable than these 3 positions at those picks in any other order.

If someone's opinion is that the Chargers should take a WR, TE, or OL in the top 3 picks, then their scenarios will look different.

As I already mentioned, Jeanty isn't going to be there, so it's not going to matter.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the Chargers don't make those exact 3 picks due to a trade of some kind. But my scenario comparison illustrates my perspective.

@tau837 Agreed that player availability in Rd1 changes the scope of the first 3 rounds greatly. If Loveland is there it’s a glove fit and 100% nails the first round. With that being such a need/BPA fit, then we can look at Rd 2 and 3 for BPA between DL/Wr/Edge taking that position off as an option for the next round. Honestly, if we don’t grab a TE Rd1, I would just push it to day 3. If we are going to rely on Herbert, he needs more weapons, so for me, barring TE at 1.22, WR or RB probably become priority in Rd2. One caveat is that Dobbins is still a FA. There’s a good possibility they have that in their back pocket if the draft doesn’t shake out and a RB they like isn’t available at the right spot.

@evolz3737 Agree Loveland is the right pick if he is there, but I'm not expecting that.

Brugler's latest 7 rounder. Where else did I see 2 VT players drafted by the Chargers recently? 😉  @erick-v

I think edge needs to be a higher priority and not sure, even though I like his potential and there's need, I'd draft Arroyo this high.

@buck-melanoma

22 - DT Grant - I like this pick given who was available

55 - TE Arroyo - I woudl have taken Edge Tuimoloau here

  • Hoping the Chargers are going to trade for Andrews during the draft, after it becomes clear they will not be able to draft Warren or Loveland, in which case there is no need to draft a TE
  • Even if that doesn't happen, I would wait on TE

86 - WR Horton - I don't mind Horton but would have taken RB Skattebo here

  • I could see that Horton in the 3rd and RB Tuten in the 4th might be a better combo than Skattebo and later WR, but I prefer Skattebo in the event they trade away their 4th.

Those two changes would have changed the rest of the draft, since Brugler has them drafting a RB in the 4th and Edge in the 6th. Plus, if they trade for Andrews, they are giving something up... hopefully nothing earlier than their 4th round pick.

Instead of LB and Edge in the 6th, I would have taken a center and safety. Then that could change the last pick from safety to something else.

Overall, not bad, and an interesting exercise.

@tau837 I recognize Scattebo is a good football player, just not particularly interested in him. Of course I like seeing a VT player, or in this case players, drafted and I think Tuten would add a dynamic dimension to the room, but I could see other backs with that pick just as easily.

I'd certainly take a reasonable Andrews trade over Arroyo...proven commodity over potential. Is there a pathway there? Rumors have certainly died down. Has interest?

I'm concerned center will once again be left basically unaddressed, at least via the draft. I might well have spent our second here if Wilson was available.

A late round safety I like is Woodson outta Cal. Good football IQ, hard worker, seems a Harbaugh kinda kid.

Agree an overall decent draft. I, like you, would make a few tweaks.

@buck-melanoma Andrews rumors have picked up. The Ravens said this week when asked if he would be traded that anything could happen, or something like that. That has fueled new speculation.

@tau837 I would have preferred Ezeiruaku, Barron Egbuka or Nolen over Grant in Rd1. Of course the rest of the draft is like a domino falling after Rd 1, but lets say Ezeiruaku was the pick a 1.22 then Rd 2 could have been Farmer, Ratledge or Harris.

Rd 3 was a big whiff. Porter or Fannin there would have been slam dunks given a different Rd2 pick. I like my 3 rounder better.

1. Ezeiruaku

2. Farmer

3. Fannin

This gives us Edge, a good big bodied DT, and a pass catching weapon at TE. RB are still flush in Rd4.
