Still would prefer Loveland at 1.22 and not sure this does enough for the edge group, but overall not a bad way to go.

@buck-melanoma I can’t wait for next Monday when mocks become moot. The team will be better by then with a group of rookies and a whole lot of hope.

@smith No doubt, but until then this is the best we've got to keep us engaged.

@smith right there with ya, my friend.

Of course I want the team better. On a homerish note, I'd love to see that happen via the addition of a Virginia Tech player or 2. 🙂

@buck-melanoma There's a good possibility you get at least one.

@smith Mocks will be moot but then there will be a bunch of overreaction about why they didn't address every position of "need" and they shouldn't have drafted XYZ in the 3rd and 6th round! Smile

@blue-beers Oh, shoot. I wasn’t even thinking about all the Monday morning GMs. At least we can all pass some time next week playing “Get to Know Your UDFAs.”

@buck-melanoma Not a fan of this draft. For me:

  • Don't want WR in the first
  • Hate G in the second and have concern about Ratledge's extensive injury history
  • Robinson is fine in the 3rd, but using the first 2 picks that way puts them behind and leaves them with a weaker than necessary Edge in the 4th and much weaker than necessary RB in the 6th
  • Still hoping they trade for TE Andrews, making Evans unnecessary

I find this concerning, since it is Popper's attempt at predicting what will actually happen. I understand he won't get it all right, but the thought process is concerning for me.

@tau837 You know I am an Egbuka fan so I would be fine with him. I agree that I would prefer DT or Edge in Rd2. I think waiting later than that would be a miss. I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I would not mind Fannin in Rd3. He’s not Loveland but he does have some receiving chops at TE that we don’t have on the roster right now.

@evolz3737 I have some misgivings about waiting for an edge...DT less so....and made that and my preference for Loveland (if available) known in the initial post.

@tau837 Herbert is our MVP and greatest team asset. Hard for me to go against getting him another valid target and I'd certainly expect Ratledge to be fully vetted medically. I probably would prefer edge here because of the drop-off in talent but I recognize 2 things with the Ratledge pick....dissatisfaction with the Houston playoff game and Harbaugh's intent to build from the trenches.

@buck-melanoma I think positional scarcity should be a factor after Rd1. I think Edge and WR drop off far more than IDL or DT, so depending on who the Rd1 selection is, I would try to focus there in Rd2. However if a Henderson or Judkins were there at RB, I would be all in for either of them as that represents tremendous value at 2.55.

@evolz3737 I agree with all that you've said here. I'm less interested in Judkins at 2.55 than Henderson but otherwise I think we're of similar mindset regarding this draft.

DT/IDL is the deepest class in this draft, probably the deepest one for that position group I can remember offhand. I won't be upset if that's the pick at 1.22 (unless it's a crazy reach, which I don't foresee) but I think it can wait and we still get a strong rotational guy/borderline starter.

Maybe this afternoon I'll get a chance to do the clusters I've been meaning to do.

@buck-melanoma That would be cool. I am getting my positional Big Board together and it's harder than you think trying to rank just the top 5 at each position. If we were to go DT in RD1 I would prefer Harmon or Nolen because of the interior pass rush. I would not be as interested in Grant as IMO he is more of a run stuffer at this point and I think this team needs to add pass rush and you can find good run stuffers (CJ West, Farmer, Collins, Jackson, Phillips) later.

@evolz3737 I'm pretty high on both of those guys with a slight nod to Nolen....I think his ceiling is a little higher. Agree about the interior pass rush consideration. But Grant has the connection/familiarity thing possibly working in his favor.

@buck-melanoma True. Plus he has played in this exact defense already. Like I said, I wouldn't be stoked, but I would get it and it is still a need position for us.

I agree Herbert is the Chargers MVP. I agree with the zeal to get him more surrounding talent. But the offense has already been upgraded at least moderately this offseason, including passing targets and IOL. The defense has been downgraded, and the team is going to suffer for it if they don't properly address the defense in the draft.

I don't like it, but I can live with Egbuka at 22 if none of Hunter, Abdul Carter, Walker, Jeanty, Warren, Loveland, Grant, or Harmon (or McMillan) are available. That seems like an unlikely scenario to me.

IMO OL at 55 is more egregious. It does not properly apply reources in a manner that maximizes the roster. Having already upgraded RG with Becton, it should be good enough to have Zion, Bozeman, James, Pipkins, and Salyer battling for the LG and C spots, with the losers serving as primary OL depth. OL should not be a priority in the top 3 rounds of the draft.

If they are hell bent on drafting a guard, I hope they trade down from 22 to acquire an extra day 2 pick to do so.

@tau837 Agreed. I think IOL can wait until Rd 3 or slightly later. Guys like Milum, Frazier, Colby, Kandra, Majors, Monheim, McLaughlin can all be added. You could even look to some tweener OT that project inside like Mbow, Cam Williams or Trapilo. Outside of Zabel, there aren't any OG I like before Rd2 at the earliest. I am not a fan of Booker, and I would really dislike the pick, but I would understand the logic behind the selection.

ESPN had Peter Schragers mock on the front page this AM:

https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2025/story/_/id/44790164/2025-nfl-mock-draft-peter-schrager-first-round-predictions-32-picks-trades-buzz-qbs-sanders-ward-dart

I could definitely see the board falling this way (not exactly but by the time you get to 22). I'd be good with the Grant pick. The only other option would be one of the Edge guys but all of the group of Scourton, Stewart, Pierce and Ezeiruaku have their warts.

I am trusting Hortiz & Co. to pick who they think will fit the system the best, but I will say that I think Grant has a higher floor and likely a higher ceiling if he develops more of a pass rush from the inside. Might be smart to just take the safe bet.

One other thing that caught my eye in this mock is Mason Graham slipping. I hate the idea of trading up, but if he fell even a little further than 13 it would start to get tempting...

@blue-beers IMO, He's not a blue chip, slam dunk prospect. There isn't a wide difference between him and the next 3-4 DT in the class. The position is deep, but not with premier talent.

I would like to post my last attempt at a mock before tomorrow night. It is an interesting one that I do like for trading down turned 10 picks into a solid 12 new players with late prospects to be gleefully watched when training camp competition will determine final 53 and most if the 16 practice squad spots: Si heeerrreee they are:

Thought I would post my latest mock draft simulation and I was very pleased as the simulator no longer had the technical glitch I experienced last time and there were some very legit but not over done trade offers as well. By judiciously trading down a couple of times I ended up with 12 players and 5 I believe in rounds 1-3. I really had to tear myself and some hair with my decision to go ahead and get OT to play guard behemoth Hollin Pierce of Rutgers instead of taking OG of Sac State Webb who is a great OL prospect.

1. 31 DT Kenneth Grant Michigan
2. 56 Edge JT Tuimoloau Ohio State
3. 60 RB Quinshon Judkins Ohio State
4. 86 TE Terrance Ferguson Oregon
5. 95 WR Tory Horton Colorado State
6. 102 CB Zy Alexander LSU

7. 125 RB Bhayshul Tuten Virginia Tech
8. 181 OC Jake Majors Texas
9. 199 OT Hollin Pierce Rutgers
10. 209 OG Marcus Tate Clemson
11. 214 TE Joshua Simon South Carolina
12. 256 QB Kurtis Rourke Indiana as Mr Penultimate.

Positives are: 5 players taken within top 100 whereas we only have 3 selections now. Known and discussed players gotten for lower selections like Grant at 31. Double dips on RB and TE where we will have great depth for those 2 positions going forward. Overall coverage of needs but definitely offense emphasized.

Negatives are: Some unpredictable outcomes with some selections. Only 3 defensive players taken in a defense heavy draft class. Light on CB, no safety and no LB taken. Some personal preferences used that may not be regarded as good selections.

So the conclusion is that we have a very good trade down possibility in both the first round and some other picks as well. We will with this amount of picks really restock the shelf on offense while meeting the minimum of needs on defense by using first two spots on that side of the ball. With FA and UDFA we will have lots of competition to complete a much deeper roster with fewer stars than last seasons' 53 man roster. Younger and faster will be a trend overall as well.

I may do some more but I will not post another before we all watch tomorrow night. Bolt up all you fans!!
